Yeah, I see that too. They’re checking computer data screens while driving and I agree that they need to be held to the same standards as everybody else. We have the technology for voice commands and heads-up displays that can be used in their vehicles.

The fines don't have to hit the poor at all. It's completely voluntary to text and drive and if they don't want to pay a heavy fine, they can wait until they aren't driving to do their texting.

As could rich people. However, if you have 2 million dollars the 2k fine wont hurt as much as someone who makes 40k.

They'd assign the nearest officer to the scene to investigate, and write a ticket. IDK about where you live, but that's how it works in my city.

No they wouldn't. Unless this is Mayberry population 49. You can't get an officer to come take a non-injury accident report in large urban areas. And officers cannot write tickets for anything they do not personally witness. Your area, my area, any area.

In Oregon at least, anyone can write a ticket for a person.

I don't think so, I think the first offense needs to really hurt, and people need to know (through advertising/marketing) how much it will hurt. There needs too be fear in the air about it, awareness of the fines and graphic photos about what can happen in an accident. That first offense could kill someone.

I found out all I needed to find out one day about 10 years ago. I was searching to Mitsubishi Lancer GTS information on a Mitsubishi forum online. Somebody put a photo in their post of a young man who was torn in half when his car slammed in to the back of a semi truck.

They cops found his phone stuck in time on a text. He was texting. That was his last text. They showed his body torn in half. That was all I need to see.

As said pretty vividly above... You're talking about people who are risking their very lives because think they will get away with it before anyone notices and no one will be affected. They're not going to be afraid of a fine. I think it'll just be a punitive tax on the ones who get caught... not a preventative.

I'm not sure it's about the money... it's about the mindset.
