Imagine if, even once, we (as a country) said "let's look at other systems that are working better than ours and learn from them". Nearly 20,000 people are being tested every day for coronavirus in South Korea, more people per capita than anywhere else in the world. Consensus seems to be that the initial testing phase was bungled by the US. We'll need to do better next time.

We should have gone into lock down in early Feb. By mid Feb by the latest.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda. I can guess, given the variables (technical, political, economic) it's "best guess." It takes big cajones to make the big calls, I make calls that steer hundreds of thou$ or (sometimes) a mil$ and THAT takes work. When this is over...and it will end...and there are dead and injured, there will be a reckoning and blame-storming in each country. As someone else said here, "next time we'll do better" because that's human nature, people.

I'm sitting here in my cozy home quarterbacking King County. It took to 3/11 for Gov Inslee, Dow Constantine, Mayor Durkan, and the Mayor of Tacoma (and others) to issue a definitive, crisp, and professional status report to the public. In my opinion, this should have happened Monday AM after the CDC announcement 2/27 or 2/29 that this was a "concern." That's WHO or CDC-code for, "yellow alert, start filling the sandbags!" Easy for me to say now, and I felt strongly about it then, but one might have interpreted it as a bit premature had they thrown a Cordon sanitaire around Kirkland, or Seattle in-toto, at that time due to the relatively low death and infection count.

If they choose to do this in a week or three, I wouldn't be surprised, or really hold it against them. No idea if they will. You can bet the 'Guard is gearing up, the general is one order away from shutting this place down. We shall see what all happens, I'm playing it same as everyone else week-by-week trips to the Safeway and making sure I'm a week or three ahead of the 8-ball on basic foodstuffs.

NO-O-O-o-o! I'm still planning to visit! Now I'm worried, that I may be able to get in, but may not be able to get out, if life gets too weird up there where y'all are at.

I want to know is there could be a vector that is common among the nursing homes.
Could be the employees, the first responders, nursing staff, various maintenance people traveling between facilities, pastors visiting seniors, friends and families?

Good question. How many nursing homes have been affected, and where are they in relation to each other?

2 nursing homes, the first in Kirkland, King county and the other just recently in Stanwood, Snohomish county.

They're not that close, and Stanwood getting it feels really strange. Of course, the first US case was treated in Everett, closer to Stanwood than Kirkland. It's said the virus hangs around a long time, invisible, and then it hits. Yeah, that's how it feels.

I hate to rain on your parade, but if this isn't a necessary visit, I'd seriously consider rescheduling. I was in Stanwood today, and the streets were eerily deserted. All libraries in King and Snohomish county are closing indefinitely starting tomorrow and the schools are all closing down. Restaurants are empty, and the general feeling is "people, keep your distance from me!" People are skittish, and it doesn't seem overreactive. Quite a few restaurants are closing as well all over. I was also in Mt. Vernon today, walking down the main downtown street, and again, restaurants closed, and those open were empty. Few people on the street, and it was a sunny day today.

People whisk by, so very different from the norm of eye contact and if not a polite, friendly nod, usually a pleasant "hello!" Not today. Today everyone averted their eyes, walking head down.

I've never experienced anything like this, and if cases continue to climb, I believe lockdown is imminent. I wouldn't risk coming into this area if not necessary. Why? You genuinely might not be able to get out when you want to leave, and why risk getting infected? Why come here? Unless you are coming to care for a loved one who needs you, I can't imagine why anyone would choose to come here right now. To visit? Everyone wants to keep their distance from everyone else. There's no comfort or pleasantry in visiting now. To eat out? Um, a lot of the places you like to eat are likely to be closed, and of those open, who knows if the person preparing your food is a carrier or sick but not showing signs yet? To visit museums? Closed to the public. About the only thing you can do here is hike and do the outdoor stuff, so if that's why you love to come back - to hike, to wander the woods, to drive to the beach and hang out there, then I think all that will be available to you.

One thing, too, to consider. If you come, and then you are able to leave, it can take up to 14 days before you know you've contracted the virus. In those 14 days, you've passed through a lot of public places outside of WA and could potentially introduce the virus to places that have so far avoided infection.

If you don't NEED to be here, it seems to be a bad idea for a lot of reasons, to come.

And one last thing - if you do come, bring a huge stash of toilet paper. People have bought it all up, and I'm thinking I might have to go out into the woods and start collecting pine needles pretty soon. Given that the trees don't have leaves yet, pine needles may have to do! Yikes! (Good thing I know what nettles look like and won't use them by accident )

A pandemic has been predicted for years, if not decades. And many predicted exactly what is happening today. A complete economic collapse worldwide. Why there has been zero planning for this is inexcusable.
