“In a stunning turnaround, Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes announced Wednesday that he will withdraw the city’s motion to stop most federal oversight of the Seattle Police Department.

The decision comes in the midst of massive daily protests calling for more stringent police accountability, scrutiny over the department’s response to the protests and pressure from elected officials and community members to reconsider the city’s quest to wind down federal monitoring of its police.

“We’ve witnessed historic events this past week,” Holmes said in a statement. ”We saw protests erupt in cities across our nation in reaction to an heinous act by a Minneapolis police officer, rooted in a larger history of racially disproportionate policing. George Floyd’s murder was gruesome and the Minneapolis officers’ apparent nonchalance chilled me to the bone. I am struggling with feelings of sadness, grief and anxiety, and know I am not alone.”

Holmes said he would withdraw the request to mostly end federal oversight of Seattle Police — which had been winding down after nearly 10 years of work — to allow time to review and assess the department’s response to recent demonstrations.

The agreement has been in place since 2012 after a federal investigation into the Seattle Police Department — led by then-U.S. Attorney and now-Mayor Jenny Durkan — found unconstitutional levels of force and patterns of bias in police actions.

Does federal oversight even matter with this administration? This seems more like a symbolic gesture. Anyway, if things haven't changed by now, maybe it's time for a different approach.

The people of Seattle should be very cautious with condemning Seattle's police for something they had nothing to do with. Look what happened in Baltimore when the police stood down after their city was burned down after nights of rioting and looting. If you're honest, you will admit that Baltimore is now a far more dangerous city... The sad thing was that the people focused all the blame onto their police force for "being too aggressive and shortly afterward, blamed the police for being too passive and not aggressive enough, in response to the major spike in violent crimes... Their shooting and murder rates has increased by 140% after their police was ordered to stand down by their mayor and city council.

All I have to say is good luck with this one and good luck with Seattle's police's recruitment and retention of their patrol officers... I'd bet that within the next few weeks/months, there will be a major increase in retirements and resignations within those ranks.

If this is the will of the people of Seattle, then fine, but accept what is most likely to follow directly after this once the dust settles down. If people were complaining about police inaction in Seattle, especially in the downtown area, now or prior to all this chaos, watch for what it to truly follow next... I hope I'm wrong on this one since I would hate for my city, the place where I was born and raised, slide deeper into the darkness.

Just be careful of what you wish for cuz you might actually get it... In more than one way.

Yes, you don't solve problems by shooting yourself in the foot.

Why is there federal oversight of Seattle police going on? What happened to cause that? It's been going on for 10 years? Come to think of it, there were some significant incidents involving Native Americans downtown, but that was years ago, AFAIK.

What's the history on this?

I don't understand the photograph with the article. Why are those demonstrators dressed in all black with some kind of headgear on--looks almost like some kind of helmet and goggles? A recent article said, that about 3/4 of the people arrested for violence during the Seattle protests weren't from Seattle, and many were from out-of-state. The people in the photo, frankly, look like professional demonstrators, ready for anything, as if they'd planned to be disruptive.

More info needed....

I believe the case that kicked this off was the killing of Native American wood carver John T. Williams who was shot in the back by an officer while he was crossing the street in 2010. That investigation found a pattern of excessive use of force by SPD.

From the ACLU: 35 community organizations write U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan to request investigation of excessive use of force, particularly against people of color by Seattle Police Department (SPD). They cite recent incidents including an officer kicking and threatening to “beat the [expletive] Mexican **** out of” a Latino man lying face down on the sidewalk; an officer kicking the groin of a Black teenager standing still with his hands in the air and then kicking him several more times after he fell to the ground; and the killing of First Nations wood carver John T. Williams.

Dressed in black because of the Black Lives Matter movement. They have helmets and goggles on to protect themselves in case SPD uses tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash grenades. A few bad actors in the crowd can ruin it for all the peaceful protestors. Just a few nights ago, that happened. A couple of people in the crowd of a 100+ threw water bottles and traffics cones at SPD in quick succession. SPD does not tolerate the being thrown at them, and they can’t see who and get to the few people who threw the stuff, so they used tear gas, flash grenades, and rubber bullets on entire, peaceful, crowd.

Good post, thanks. I remember the Williams case. Unforgettable. The rest of it sounds awful, too. What's wrong with police?! Jeez! Power corrupts.

Not trying to be funny, but has anybody noticed........that the city of Seattle is asking the Trump Administration to continue the oversight of the Seattle Police Department to insure that it is not a racist government agency.

Well, the Trump admin is the only presidential admin we have right now, so if the federal oversight is to be continued, there's no other choice. However, it may soon end, so then the city will be working with the Biden admin (presumably, unless The Burn garners millions of write-in votes...), so don't see a problem.
