Same here! Moved to a "nice" apartment complex down here in Vancouver, and I'm baffled about no central air. Summers may be relatively short in the PNW, but over 90 is over 90 and it's nasty in an upstairs apartment! So yeah we bough one for the front room and one for the bedroom. They definately help, but they're also bulky and take up room in a very small place. Had we known, we probably would have looked specifically for central air, but we had little time to look.

is residential construction without central AC a west of the cascades happenstance, or is it the norm for the entire state? I remember my short month stint in Fairchild, and it was plenty warm during the day, all buildings had AC that I remember.

Entire state? I don't think anybody could live in Tri-Cities or Yakima in 105F weather without AC. Even in Seattle area newer houses/apartments have some AC.

This is the beauty of Seattle area. We get proper summer ( even if it’s for 3-4 weeks) with 80+ weather unlike SF. At the same time it is not oppressive hot and humid weather, like in south or mid west. Even in winter, we get snow ( 1 week), to appreciate some hot chocolate and holiday movies, but it’s not non stop snow like Chicago or NYC.
If one can stand the cloud cover and shorter days in winter, there is no better place than PNW. Lot of people talk about beach and sunshine, but you quickly get bored of that when it’s like that for 12 months like in Miami.

I completely disagree. It is not 9 months, it is 8 months!

That's what people said before I moved here from the south. 4th year here and I am loving the mild weather! Moreover, it's very inexpensive to go to SoCal for a week during winter and get the dose of sunshine..

There's Midwest solid monotonous light grey in the winter and there's Seattle grey. At least in Seattle the clouds have more dimension and are a little more interesting to look at. It's moodier. People who can appreciate that I think don't mind the grey as much.

For those of us up at 5am this morning in Sammamish, the thunder and 5 minute downpour was a nice treat. Probably not enough to prevent having to water the lawn this weekend for the 2nd time this year.

Your lawn must be in the shade. Grass that is in direct sunlight has been yellow since late June.
