I can't imagine being bored in Seattle. What do you do where you are that Seattle is boring?

There are so many things to do. I love ferrying out to Widbey Island and roaming around, going to the beach, hiking in the mountains, mountain biking, rent a canoe at the lake, the possibilities are endless.

There are so many things to do. I love ferrying out to Widbey Island (costs $$) and roaming around (this is about all we do while there), going to the beach (where?), hiking in the mountains (where?), mountain biking (we don't have mountain bikes), rent a canoe at the lake (costs $$ - and what lake?), the possibilities are endless (sure, if you have lots of $$)."

If you're going to do the Cedar River Trail in Renton ( where the sign on the Cedar River trail warns pedestrians to use caution where vehicles and aircraft cross the trail) there is a nearby Canoe and Kayak rental place( accessible from the trail) which is supposedly less expensive than the Greenlake rental place and, to top it off, it's where the Cedar River meets Lake Washington, so you can do two different bodies of water.

Well, a cooking class would cost you, too, but that seemed to be money you were willing to spend. I don't think the above would cost more than your $50 limit. You can rent mountain bikes.

If you're not renting a car, Metro buses run to within walking distance of Cougar Mountain's Red Town trailhead. Cougar Mountain Park is huge in terms of acreage( a couple of thousand, I think), and has many miles of hiking trails. Red Town Trailhead is in Newcastle.

You can go to a farmer's market. I think there's one pretty much every day in the summer somewhere around the city. They are interesting places to poke around and find good things to eat, and most of them have some sort of musical entertainment as well. Fresh - Local - Fun — Neighborhood Farmers Market Association

Have you thought about contacting companies or organizations to see if you can get a tour of their facilities? You could call the Central branch of the Public Library and tell them that you're an engineering student and are interested in seeing how their technology is coordinated and set up. They have an automated book sorting system that is supposed to be fairly impressive when it's working right. Tell them it's part of a research paper that you're writing. Someone will probably be happy to show you around. I used to use the research paper line to get tours of places - people are proud of what they do and they love to show it off. And it doesn't cost anything, but it's nice to send the person a thank-you note in the mail after they've shown you around.

You can rent canoes at the UW boathouse, just behind Husky Stadium, for $7.50 an hour. Right across the ship canal is the Arboreteum, with lots of narrow channels and islands to explore.
