Hello, my family is planning to go to Seattle in spring 2023 but we might be changing that plan due to safety concerns in downtown. Has downtown started to clean up and is it getting safer? The hotel that I am looking at is the Hyatt Regency by the Paramount Theatre. We are also looking at Airbnb’s in Fremont and Maple Park (I know these are not downtown). Are those areas better for safety reasons?

Thank you,
Alex

Yes, that is a safe area. Tons of tourists every day are in downtown Seattle. Cruise ships dump thousands of passengers into the Pike Place-Westlake area.

3rd Avenue isn't the greatest street, so just watch what is going on when you walk between Pike Place Market and the Hyatt. I also wouldn't recommend being along 3rd Ave at night. Probably nothing going to happen to you, but it is not a pleasant experience.

Are suburban AirBnbs better? Hard to say, depends on your definition of better. Quieter? Definitely. More people watching and more to do? No.

Just use common sense, you'll be fine. Downtown is a lot more vibrant than it was two years ago.

The way things have changed here, one cannot really predict what it will be like in 2023. I agree, however, that things have improved, with the only places I would avoid being 3rd/4th/Pike/Pine, and at times Capitol Hill, which might have a protest or riot depending on what's in the news. Wherever you are, if you have a car don't leave anything in it. Car prowls are probably the most common crime here.

My wife and I Went to Pike's Market about three times when we were there. Did not have issues.
We went to a Mariners Game where my wife Saw her First Baseball Game. She even got a certificate for seeing her
First Baseball Game. No Issues there either. Of course it is good to watch what is going on around you.

There are no protests or riots in Capitol Hill. ????

You're much more likely to be in the vicinity of a gunfight than a protest on Capitol Hill these days. I say that as a lower Cap resident (I'm two blocks from Pike/Pine); it's a fantastic neighborhood to live in, but Seattle is a city, just like LA, Chicago, New York... you get the picture.

To the OP: Pike and Pine are very long streets; it's fine to walk up and down them the whole way. However the 3rd Ave area which intersects Pike and Pine, is a rough street. You'll know it when you see it! Just keep going and have a fun visit.

Early July, I hosted my sister and her friend at HotelAndra (boutique)(2000 4th ave)(sister hotel to Inn at the Market) 2 blocks north of Westlake, 2 blocks west of Amazon Spheres.
Your Hyatt area is fine.
Area around Pike-Pine have lots of new security.
We are all over 70 yo.
New mayor, is giving security and cleaning up the homeless camps, a very high priority. The effort is very encouraging.

But who knows what can happen in the future?
