I am a young(ish) female (23) who just took her first RN job at the UWMC. I am estatic to have scored a really nice apartment on the Ave and will be moving in the rest of my stuff over during the next couple of weeks. I am an outdoor enthusiast, which is perfect for the Northwest, I am from eastern Washington. The problem is I don't know anyone in the area, and I really don't know Seattle all that well either. I am really interested in renting some kayaks and exploring the San Juans, but I haven't ever done that before and I was hoping for some tips. How is it for someone like me to make friends in that area, or in the hospital for that matter. Does anyone work at UWMC in critical care? How accepting are they to someone looking for some outdoor adventures to share? I bike a lot, run, ski, love hiking and rock climbing, and it seems like the area would be immersed with it. Does anyone have any tips on clubs to join or places to explore that I could meet some other cool people and not have to do these things on my own any more??? That would be great! Thanks

You'll find people to hang with. Don't worry.

You could always join a group like the Mountaineers and start going on outings with them. There are probably some UW employee groups as well. Or you could take kayaking classes on Lake Union and meet people there. There are a lot of choices - just keep your eyes open for opportunities.

Thank you that helps. Does anyone know where the outdoorsy people of the U-District hang out? Are there running groups, or good cycling areas to go too?

Lots of the above. A major bicycle commuting route, the Burke-Gilman Trail, runs right across the street from UWMC. That is mostly a commuting route rather than a recreational route, though. There's lots and lots of "outdoorsy" types .... you may need to be a bit more specific on your preferred flavor of activities.
