“It took a while, but yes: Cinerama is, finally, coming back.

The Seattle International Film Festival has acquired the historic Seattle movie theater at Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street from the estate of Microsoft co-founder, investor and philanthropist Paul Allen. SIFF plans to reopen the theater, which has been closed since February 2020, later this year. The acquisition was announced at SIFF’s opening-night gala Thursday at the Paramount Theatre, and drew a huge ovation from the crowd.”

Very exciting news. There couldn't have been a better buyer for this property. It's a leg up for both downtown/Belltown and SIFF itself! I've missed the Cinerama so much!

A memorable movie theater; it's where I first watched Star Wars back in 1977. They had a line running for blocks.

That was at the UA 70/150 (my stepfather managed it). 2001: A Space Odyssey was at the Cinerama.

I was able to by-pass the blocks-long line and walk right in.

I believe that 2001: A Space Odyssey was shown in the Cinerama in 70mm Super Panavision (2.20 : 1), although there was also a 35mm Panavision (2:35 : 1) version for theaters not equipped for 70mm. The original Star Wars was in 35mm Technicolor (2:35 : 1).

The only movie I saw there was Vertigo and the screen set up was very effective in highlighting the cinematography. That's one I'd go to see again.
