I've been kicking around my idea of a perfect life, and I finally realized that I want to live in a neighborhood of families where fathers are teaching their sons (and daughters) how to build rockets and robots in their backyards.

Does a place like that exist in Seattle? Because that would be awesome.

I'm one of those Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov "foundation" reading type brainiacs. I want to send my kids to a good school, and I want to live in a safe neighborhood of the kind of people who are amused by pulling scientifc pranks (the legal, fun kind). Oh, and I need to be near good air. The good air is really the most important part, because my son has terrible respiratory issues. You get bad air from being land bound with all the tailpipe emissions coming right at you.

Any thoughts?

I also need to be within a 30-45 minute drive to the airport. (excluding ferry time, because I like the ferries).

Default I want to live there, too

We are moving to Bothell area and I, too would like to know where to live. My husband is already temporarily renting an apartment. I am transferring with my job and will join as soon as the paper work goes through.

He is the creative one and is a Sunnyvale transplant via Sacramento and Kansas City (don't ask him about the Missouri part....it will bring back PTSD and negate all of the therapy...ha?)

I am excited his job led him to Seattle. He seems SO much happier.

Anyway, I digress. If I promise not to talk your ear off, will you hint to where the cool geek parents live? We have a son entering kindergarten (and a teenager we are trying to convince to come with us...versus finishing senior year in Missouri).

Thanks,
Kerri

...I mean happier that he is in Seattle versus Missouri. He is a true Californian. Missouri was almost the death of him....spiritually. I couldn't stand seeing a creative genius be sucked into the small minding thinking we have experienced here. I demanded he get to the coast, before he forgot how to smile.

I have read some of the posts concerning Seattle and how some transplants do not enjoy the weather, etc. I appreciate CityGirl's comments and was excited to learn she posted here.

BTW -one of my favorite birthday presents to give children is a rocket kit. (They have kits for various age levels.) I am not so sure the parents of the children were as excited as I was. Gosh, I thought everyone loved rockets.

Seattle is an area that has a disproportionately high percentage of geeks, so many neighborhoods are represented. Capitol Hill has it's share. So does Fremont, which has it's own military surplus rocket on display, across the street from a rescued statue of Lenin.
...And Vashon Island has it's share of rural geeks, but only a 20 minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle.
