Interesting to read the thread and see the view of others. My personal perspective is, we as combined humanity (east asian, south asian, european, african etc.) need to do better and change the backward custom around the world whether it's in India, Ghana, Japan, Brazil or USA. In some places it can be getting rid of caste system, in others it would be removing institutional racism and in others it may just be attitude of general public against a certain ethnic group. We should not be justifying our own negative behavior by pointing at another group that is also doing something wrong.

In the past (50-60 years back), the world was still disconnected and communities could develop in isolation. But in today's connected world where the commerce, livelihood and interaction has increased exponentially due to internet and fast travel, we have to do better.

I am from South Asian background (not Indian), but I really loved the friendliness of the people in US, the smile and holding the door custom when I first came here. I have always used that in the last 20 years and it's a pleasant feeling. But at the same time, there are some aspects of my original culture that I also like, for example parents & elderly are an integral part of the family and everyone spends time with them and retirement homes are rare. I have two 70+ white neighbors and my wife and I spend time to talk to them in the weekends, bring dinner over sometimes and hear all about their interesting life in growing up in pacific north west. They were surprised that we were so engaged while their own children only visit once or twice a year.

The following narration by Carl Sagan, sums up my thought:
