For a variety of work and personal reasons my family will be relocating from California to Seattle in the spring. It's unclear at this point how often I'll have to physically be in an office and if so, where it will be, so for now we're focused on schools and neighborhoods. It's most likely we'll end up in Seattle proper around Madrona/Madison Park or over in Bellevue. We're looking at private schools for our two girls and Annie Wright Schools in Tacoma looks awesome but I'm worried that won't be realistic living in Seattle or the East Side. Do families make that trek every day, or are there other towns/neighborhoods halfway between Seattle and Tacoma we should be looking at? We have $1.5-$2M to spend on a house. We love skiing, mtn biking and all that, but also want decent proximity to city amenities (symphony, opera, restaurants, etc...) once all that reopens. I'm mostly flying blind planning this move because it's so hard to travel right now.

No, you do not want to have that kind of distance for your kids. It's at best 45 minutes to an hour from Seattle or Bellevue in the middle of the night, but at the times you or the public transit would be going it could be double. There are many Eastside and Seattle private schools, such as:

Thanks for the insight. What's the reputation/vibe of Eton? We looked into it a little bit but gravitated more to Bush and Annie Wright as we're hoping for a k-12 situation. We want a non-denominational school.

Hi cpv. Seattle to Tacoma daily would be a brutal thing to do, I wouldn’t wish it on you. There are certainly places between Seattle and Tacoma but I don’t think they would give you the kind of culture I sense you want. Have you considered Holy Names Academy on East Capitol Hill? Our 15 1/2 year old daughter goes there (online right now of course) and loves it. Oldest school in WA state. It’s Catholic officially but lots of kids of all faiths and no faith at all go there too
. Heartfelt place and great academics. She went to Bright Water Waldorf School kindergarten through 8th grade. Bush School is quite closeby in lovely Washington Park also.
We live close to there, I bet you would like the vibe (it’s fits your budget as well) of Madrona. Madison Valley, Madison Park (where we live) and East Capitol Hill are really nice too. Lots of cafes, coffee shops, neighborhood feeling in those areas. Seattle museums are slowly starting to open, the opera, symphony and ballet are close when things get rolling again. Quite a bit of character architecture, little ethnic eateries and offbeat shops are all around the areas I’ve mentioned. In short, fun vibrant area, we like it, No matter where you live in Seattle, it’s just a hop/skip out I-90 or Hwy 2 toward hiking/skiing.
