I'm sorry, everyone, I misspoke. I meant the Seattle region, not Seattle proper. A fantastic school district is our first priority, upper end community is our second.

Thanks again!

Maple Valley is in the Tahoma school district, which is great, and the Issaquah school district is also great. While the Renton school district is considered not so great, parts of Renton are in the Issaquah district, and smaller parts are in the Tahoma district.
Shoreline, north of Seattle, also has a very good school district.
While the Seattle school district is not good at all, there are individual schools that are considered very good, but parents need to stay vigilant to keep them that way.

City-Data posters, and a fair bit of research out there, say the following cities have the best school districts, from north to south: Bellingham, Shoreline, Bellevue, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Maple Valley. "Upper end" communities would include Shoreline, Bellevue, Issaquah and Mercer Island, as well as parts of Bellingham, Maple Valley, and northeastern Renton within the Issaquah School District.

You forgot probably the best school district in the area - Lake Washington.... and Shoreline is upper end? Really?

I have a good friend in Renton with a 4 yr old. She is desperately trying to sell her condo and MOVE OUT because she does not want her child to start school in Renton. Renton is NOT considered upper end, nor is it considered a good school district.

Jenbar,
No, Renton's school district is not considered good, but that's not what the last poster said.
This is what she said:
"northeastern Renton within the Issaquah School District"

What happened to the Northshore School District - I thought that was supposed to be a good one too?

Northshore is still considered good, but not nearly as good as the Lake Washington (Juanita, Kirkland, Redmond) District it borders.

The fantastic public schools were here about 15 years ago, but no more. There are still good public schools, but not like we had. Our schools and libraries were once the pride of the West, including our computer resources. The state has been lowering standards over the last ten years so that more kids can graduate, howewer, which means the lowest common denominator is catered to more than achievers... you will need to fill in the blanks (duck for moderator delete!)

If you do choose a public school, try to get your kids into the honors program so they can stay challenged. We homeschool ours because the public schools are teaching less of what they need and more of what they cannot unlearn... no thanks!

Whew, what a relief to hear it's still considered good! Thanks, Ira500, for the feedback!

We bought our home in Bothell in early 2004, which (at that time) offered affordability within a good school district.
