I'm pondering a job offer with Boeing in Everett, Washington. I'm unable to drive due to a medical problem. What is the best form of public transportation in the Seattle area? Where is are some of the most economical places to live where I could have something of a social life and get to work easily.

I'd suggest using the Chicago, St. Paul, and Milwaukee railroad to get from Chicago to Seattle but I'm a few years late on that one.

As far as transportation, Seattle is blessed with a very good bus system. There are lots of buses that serve Boeing-Everett. As long as your apartment/home is on one of those bus lines, you'll do fine.

The best bet for you to is took at the bus lines that serve Boeing-Everett (Metro Transit, Sound Transit, and Community Transit are the three bus systems that serve the plant) and see where your options are.

One question I should ask is can you walk ok? Boeing-Everett is a big plant and you'll walk quite a bit to get from the bus stop to your building. Typically you can plan on 10-15 minutes each way.

The Sounder Commuter Train operates two lines. One of them is between Seattle and Everett, and the other is Tacoma and Seattle - but you can still get from Tacoma to Everett. Anyway, if you choose to live in a suburb between Seattle and Everett, it may be easier to hop onto the train.

The link below shows you the current schedule so that you can judge how long it takes to travel. You'll likely have to use a bus to the train and from the train if you live and work a little too far from the stations.

Sound Transit: Sounder Commuter Rail Schedules

The north Puget Sound area is a little more expensive than the south area. But you might want to look into Edmonds and Mukilteo.

Good luck on your move.

Mukilteo is pretty nice and has fast and frequent bus service to the Everett Boeing plant via Community Transit.
