My husband will be stationed at Ft Lewis and I will be working in Seattle. So we have to find something between the two.

How bad is the commute from Renton to Ft Lewis?
How bad is the commute from Renton to Seattle?

We really don't have a choice Ft Lewis and South of Seattle. We are just trying to find the best place to live. And also one with a good school district.

Renton to Seattle would be a fairly common commute, depending on exactly where in Renton you lived you'd probably have at least a 30 min commute, on bad traffic days it could be an hour.

Ft Lewis is a pretty good distance from Renton, a good 40 miles (again depending on exactly where you lived), which could easily be a 90 min commute at peak times. Being in the military maybe he would be going in early and get ahead of most traffic, but still 45 min to an hour wouldn't be uncommon.

Renton isn't a bad place to live, it's just a long ways from Ft Lewis. If you wanted to split the difference between commutes I'd suggest Auburn, or maybe Covington.

The commute from Burien to Fort Lewis would be about the same as from Renton...Burien is also undergoing positive changes, and has a big park on Puget Sound, but also has some nasty parts. If you lived south of 150th, and west of 1st ave S, that would be better...Not that far from Burien is Normandy Park, which is much nicer ( and has a Trader Joe's store)..
If you're looking for in between places, Kent, Auburn, Federal Way, and North Tacoma should be considered as well.
