I am considering taking a new job in Seattle and looking for a neighborhood to live.

1. A Jewish presence. We are not religious but don't want to be the only Jew in the town.
2. Excellent school district for special ed. I have an 8 year old son on the autistic spectrum. I would be moving from CT.

I have no problem commuting to work.

thanks,

If you move to Northeast Seattle or Mercer Island you will find a Jewish presence. Following is the link for the Stroum Jewish Community Center's website. Why don't you call them directly, they may be able to help you. Stroum Jewish Community Center - Stroum Jewish Community Center

Mercer Island even has a small Jewish high school, Northwest Yeshiva High School.

Default Hmm

Well im not too sure where the best Jewish population is around here but I also have children in the spectrum. They are 3 and 4. I am actually pretty pleased with all of the support that I have gotten for them in this state. Children's Hospital in Seattle is great too, at the Neurodevelopmental clinic. They also attend a awesome Therapeudic Daycare. I dont think you will have any issues with Autism support in this state. Good luck and welcome if you decide to move out here!

Ps. I am actually thinking of starting a group for parents who have children in the spectrum. Not sure how it will work and all yet but its been a thought.

The Seward Park area has two synagogues. Very large Jewish population. We are the only house for blocks with Christmas lights!

You wouldn't be the only Jew around. I'm here too...But seriously folks, there isn't a huge Jewish presence but there are probably a dozen synagogues, a couple of Jewish community centers, and some neighborhoods which Jews have larger numbers, like Mercer island, bellevue, Seward park, and Ravenna/Northeast Seattle....I think I read somewhere that the Seattle area has something like 50,000 Jews, but a really good bagel is hard to come by.

marko, please don't think you'd be the "only" Jew in Seattle. Michael Medved (a prominent talk show host from Seattle) is very happy in Seattle and continually describes a happy and active synagogue life. This issue would be the LEAST issue you'd need to be concerned about in a move to Seattle. I can assure you that autistic specialists of all stripes are available in the city, as well.

Hi Marco

As a Catholic who has been fortunate enough to attend a couple of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs I can assure you that you will not be the only Jewish person in the neighborhood. For special ed I would highly recommend you consider the Eastside of Seattle. Lake Washington, Bellevue and Issaquah are all excellent school districts with excellent special ed resources. I would avoid Seattle School District. I am the mother of a 14 year old boy with autism and I have been very happy with the Lake Washington School District. Good luck with your move.

Default Bellevue special ed. services

We are Jewish (not religious) and we live in Bellevue. Our 4 year old boy is autistic and attends a program in public school geared specifically for ASD kids. It is very good. Integrated classroom in the morning and 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 ABA in the afternoon. This is pre-school, I'm am not sure what is offered for older kids but I would guess that it is pretty good.
Bellevue is the best place for an autistic kid in the greater Seattle area.
