Hello, I am hoping there are some informed opinions out there about choosing between Seattle or Portland. I am moving from Olympia.... so I know both areas a bit.
One of my motivating factors is work. It seems like there are 10 jobs in Seattle to Portland's 1, and the cost of living is more expensive in Seattle, but not THAT much more.

BUT my friend just told me that jobs won't make me happy..... fun connections and people will.

More diversity in Seattle..... more opportunities. (I teach yoga and am a doula) I would love to work for a non-profit that focuses on birth education.... or anything to do with maternity care.

I also have this belief that there are too many people in Portland with the same interests as me. This makes me feel a bit stifled. Any insight?

I think you're friend is mistaken. A good job will go far to ensuring your happiness. There are few things more stressful than looking for work, especially in an economy like this. However, he/she is right in that people are part of the happiness equation. I wouldn't move to either city without some sort of social support system in place.

Jennibc is absolutely right about our jobs. Since we spend so much time and energy of our lives doing the work we do, that work must make our hearts sing, or what's the point? It is also a source of meeting compatible people. So our work either nourishes or diminishes our being...

Where there are larger populations, there are increased job opportunities. Seattle has a larger population, and a more varied one, than Portland.

You don't give any hint about which "same interests" you feel Portlanders might have as you have, so it's impossible to comment.

Here are recent threads which you might want to read carefully. Many, many people have offered their ideas and points of view:

The brief amount of time my family lived in Portland was made more stressful by the lack of jobs in my husband's career field. I also think that the cost of living difference between Seattle and Portland isn't as large as some people think because Oregon has a state income tax (9% if I remember correctly?). If I had to move back to one of them, I'd pick Seattle because there is more going on there.

Default Seattle or Vancouver/Portland?

Hey everyone! So, my husband and I are looking at possibly relocating to the Pacific Northwest. It's such a beautiful area, and we like the vibe (and don't mind the rainy weather). So....the big question is- Seattle or the Vancouver/Portland area? What are the pros/cons of each? Where would you pick and why? Thanks in advance for the info!
