My wife and I are looking for a place to move and start a family. We are both originally from Santa Cruz, CA and are tired of working 12 hour days and just barely scrapping by. We are in our mid 20s. I work for UPS and could transfer, whereas, my wife would be going to school and working part-time. I love the city, however my wife would prefer something on the outskirts but not too far....our max we could afford for rent would be 1300 a month but would definately prefer somthing cheaper.....any thoughts and ideas? I know that Washintonians don't really care much for us Californians, but I think that you would be suprised if you met us.....we are very responsible, don't really party, and alot of people say that we act like we are in our 30s, I haven't really found out if thats a compliment or not but who knows......any help would be much appreciated....

Hi, R. Perhaps "a lot of people" recognize that you're y'know such as like grown up?? Washington is quite different from southern California, most importantly in terms of what matters to people every day and in life in general, and in terms of climate. Do you really understand what the climate of western Washington is? If not, you will find many, many threads on the WA and Seattle forums about it.

Here are some fabulous resources. City-Data's Washington forum and Seattle subforum have probably dozens of threads in which people here have answered questions just like yours. From most recent (first) to almost two years ago:

Give your move careful thought, but supposed resentment of Californians is a total non-issue these days, based on my experience.

Oh sorry, I forgot about this. I NEVER disagree with MichaelinWA...
I would only say that some folks, maybe those who have lived here for a long time and are now a bit older, might feel some wistfulness or nostalgia about the changes that have been undertaken here -- so, they might resent the physical changes more than incoming people. So, okay, then I do agree with MichaelinWA. Whew!!

Isn't Santa Cruz in Northern rather than Southern CA? At any rate, from your description, it sounds like you may like it here. We have some friends that relocated here recently from the Bay area and their take on it is that Seattle is much less expensive in terms of real estate but other than that costs are really similar. So that is important to take into consideration. It would be a shame to relocate only to discover that you are still struggling to make it. Although, if you have no kids then now is the time to do it. Take a chance for a couple of years and if it doesn't work out, try someplace else.

And there WAS a virile anti-CA sentiment in the late eighties here because of housing costs doubling in a short amount of time from the influx of Californians (and really, people all over the country) but I really haven't heard any CA bashing here in the past decade. Now, the Austin board is the place to be for California bashing.

Renton would be central to many places and much cheaper than $1300 per month that you can afford. Bothell and Kirkland may also suit your needs.
