Hello, My family and I are experiencing an urge to move to Seattle. I am a professional boat builder originally from NYC and my beautiful wife is Irish, we now live in Ireland with our four children, but we all want to go home to America, and Seattle seems a good idea. I've never been there, so any help on this would be great, and by the way, I know it rains a lot there but here in Ireland the daily wind and rain is a part of life, so, that wont bother us.

Given the economy, the question would be: Is anybody hiring?

Let's see, a couple of options for you in the Seattle area would be Northlake Shipyards and Todd Shipyards. There are the Naval Shipyards over in Bremerton. Perhaps the Shipyard Laborers Union office (Tacoma) might have some leads?

That's about all that comes to mind off the cuff. It's been several years since I've lived in Seattle (I live on the Peninsula now) so perhaps someone more currently "in the know" will chime in. This should get you started though-

Interesting! My grandparents did the same thing you're considering- immigrated from County Clare to Seattle. You're right, they felt "right at home" weather wise!

Thanks for answering, and yes, the economy is much the same over here, the information on the shipyards is helpfull, allthough I work mostly with smaller rowing and sailing craft, and the location would'nt neccessarily have to be the seattle city area, anywhere a boatbuilding family would be happy.

Have you looked into Port Townsend? I don't know if there are jobs for boat builders, but they have a large wooden boat festival every year. Even if it's not a good location for work, you may want to visit sometime. It's a beautiful area, but especially so for sailing & boating enthusiasts. Good luck with your search!

Thanks Lynn, the wooden boat festival sounds like something I'd have a hard time staying away from.
