Driving west on 520 over Lake Washington from Bellevue to Seattle, there are these two big blue/green/gold structures on either side of the road stuck in the lake. They're near the lake edge but still in the water. We often see bald eagles sitting on them.

What *are* they?

I believe you are talking about the The Nellie Cornish Sculptures.

Years ago the bases that the sculptures now stand on had water fountains on them, however they never did work very well and I imagine that is why they were replaced with those sculptures.

Artwork. My memory isn't good but I remember when they went up a few years ago. I *think* they were commissioned by the University, but someone can correct me on that.

Default Disappointed

I saw the subject line of this thread and clicked on it in hopes that we had our own version(s) of the Loch Ness monster.

Interesting, though.

I had always believed that the fountains came down because they were too much of a distraction and causing drivers to potentially crash. Urban legend?

The Nellie Cornish sculptures were replaced in 2002 with a sculpture called " Aurora Borealis"

Now that Ira mentioned that the Nellie Cornish Sculptures were replaced, I believe it was the Cornish Sculptures that were the cause of distractions.

If I am not mistaken the fountains were replaced because they required too much maintenance.
