And is it likely that it will happen someday?

Doesn't Seattle have a minor league hockey team? How is its following?

Lots of reasons, including the lack of a "hockey culture" (despite the proximity to Canada) as mentioned in one of the last posts on this thread:

//www.city-data.com/forum/seatt...t-canucks.html

And the Sonics' former arena isn't viable for the NHL (insufficient capacity).

There are many more basketball fans in Seattle than hockey fans, and of course the city doesn't have an NBA franchise anymore, either.

Our minor league team, the Thunderbirds, plays at the new ShoWare Center in Kent after the Sonics left Seattle. They play in the Western Hockey League, but I'm afraid their fanbase is not particularly large-- we do not have a prominent hockey culture in Seattle.

Because it's ice hockey. No one really cares.

Vancouver's just a hop and a skip away, plus Seattle and Van territorial areas would overlap, can't have that.

Seattle could have a double victory if there were a hockey/basketball arena built that would make both leagues happy. True, Key Arena is not NHL-ready. Key Arena is evidently not adequete for the NBA, either. What if, and this is a big IF, Seattle could build an arena that supported both the NHL and NBA? Wishful thinking? Perhaps, but I know there is sponsorship money that could make this happen. Just think, going from a 2-sport town to a 4-sport town, with just ONE arena. If I had the money, that would be something I would definitely invest in.

As for Vancouver-Seattle...they are two separate cities, and oh, yah, they are two separate countries! (DUH!)

BTW, this is how rivalries are built. Get a clue, NHL!

Yeah but the Islanders are one of the least-profitable franchises next to Phoenix and New Jersey and it shows they don't have enough of a fanbase to continue with two teams. Not only that, but given that the Islanders play in Long Island they're not necessarily even a New York team so people that do attend games are either die hards or live in LI. I don't know any New Yorkers who go out of their way to go to Islanders games when they have the Rangers right there.

I think a team moving back to Winnipeg will happen before the NHL even considers another US venue. Hockey also isn't necessarily only for border states though since the San Jose Sharks has the most-filled seats of any venue for the NHL at HP Pavilion and that's smack dab in the Bay Area.

The Phoenix Coyotes seem to be up for sale as their owner has declared bankruptcy.

Seattle, here's your big chance!

Just an FYI, Long Island is part of NY and its residents consider themselves NYers. There's more to NY than just the 5 boroughs.
