When I was in San Fran a couple of weeks ago, I saw a ton of single speed bikes being ridden around the city. Is this the same for Seattle? I know Seattle is a big biking city, but I wonder how practical it is to have a single speed in the city...?

Some bike messengers and others are die-hard devotees of fixed-gear bikes, or fixies. You probably know if you're one of those people. Otherwise, a multi-speed bike makes much more sense for dealing with our numerous hills and such.

Sorry, Brendon, but Seattle has nothing over on SF in the way of hills.

Still, you are correct, I cannot imagine riding Seattle's streets with a single gear, even when my knees were much younger!
