Hello Emerald City - what is up with Seattle Police and their anti-jaywalking campaign. I went to college in Cambridge, visited NYC regularly and grew up part-time in Chicago and I have never understood why everyone here is so anti-jaywalking. I love you Seattle but this is kinda wacky -- I know I am not the 1st transplant on these forums who thinks SPD is too intense with this law. Most of the east coast crosses roads when we see fit and I havent ever thought twice about it until I moved out here -- what gives?

We don't jaywalk here. That's what up.

We're significantly smarter than folks, like Manhattanites (of whom I used to be one, a long time ago), who think it's wise to use a human body to fend off an automobile.

So we don't jaywalk here. Also, there are fines here for jaywalking. Why? Because we don't jaywalk here.

You're smarter than Manhattanites? What's that about? I know Seattle has a high IQ but that statement of your's wouldn't show it. Remove your bold font as well - shows bad taste.

I thought SPD had relaxed their regulation of this...am I wrong? If not, I too, don't get it. Give people the respect to know when to cross the street or not for gawd sakes...it is so small-town! (and I'm a native).

Speaking of bad taste, I'm losing my eyesight.

The other thing that made me laugh out here at first was when everyone says "thank you" to the bus driver on their way out. Where did that custom come from? It makes Seattle feel like a little Oregon college town.

It's this kind of thing that just screams for an Almost Live sketch. I wish one of the local stations would start up another show like that.

Well, the "thanking the bus driver thing" might happen every now and then, but isn't the norm. Gonna have to disagree with you on that one...but back to jay walking, Seattleites tend not to do it due entirely to the enforcement of this law over the years. I just don't get it, as study after study concludes that pedestrian injuries and deaths are as bad, if not worse, in Seattle than other cities. So what is the friggin' point?

It's absolutely the norm on the three routes I frequent. Not sure if it's because all are express routes from downtown to the 'burbs. Doesn't bother me in the least either way.

I think I may have said thanks to the Starbucks barista who made me a latte this morning. Hopefully that doesn't make me a small-town hick.

I was a former very long time Metro employee, and believe me: there were a lot worse things said to bus drivers than " Thank You."
