Renton, Auburn and Tukwila could be anywhere from 4 to 10 feet underwater if storms are severe.

King County declares flood emergency early

WOW.

I don't get this at all. The estimates to fix the dam are in the 100 - 200 million range. The cost estimates of the flood damage are in the billions. And they are still studying the problem.

I just read about a new high school in the area that cost 100 million. Why can't tax dollars get spent where they will do the most good? I'm tired of the lame excuses.

Aw, AzDreamer. Just as soon as the blue ribbon task force finishes it's report, that report will be forwarded to the select subcommittee on flooding, and after their deliberations they will recommend that that it be brought back to the voters as a non binding advisory vote...
You can bet that if it were Medina threatened with major flooding, it would have been fixed by now.

Ha. Good point. But I imagine it probably just wasn't possible to repair it that quickly. Hopefully it won't flood this season and things will be okay.

I keep reading the name of this thread wrong. I keep reading " King County Declares Food Emergency" and suddenly panic, hoping I won't have to drive to Pierce County for dinner.

Ah, that's not so bad. I just got back from crossing the county line for the Sumner Mystery Wine Walk with dinner at Sorci's and it was fantastic.

I'm waiting for the indignant thread this winter asking "Why didn't the County warn us about this flood!?" Truly, any decision that any governmental agency is ripe for second guessing or ridicule.

Just a general question: which taxes should King County institute or which program(s) should be eliminated to pay for fixing this dam? It's not an academic question, given the budget shortfalls.

Hey, I know. Let's build a multi-million dollar light rail system to Tukwila so when it floods we can rescue those people. Oh my, I just realized the government is one step ahead of us and already has such a system. Now we don't need need to repair/maintenance a 50 year old bridge. But wait, the rail will probably be under water too. And I thought you guys were such pessimists.

And a tough question. Hopefully the federal government can narrow the funding gap. As for homeowners, I think I read somewhere that it takes 30 days for flood insurance to take effect - so don't dawdle to long in making your own budget evaluation, if you're in a flood zone.

As a total aside, I thought it was interesting that K-County provides translations in Somali and Ukrainian (there was a recent thread on which languages are spoken most often locally).

Prepare now for floods

If these areas have flooded in the recent past then definitely make sure you have or get flood insurance. The Feds are not giving grants out to people who have flooded repeatedly as they are trying to promote people not moving into flood plains. That's what's been happening in states that border the Mississippi River.
