I know Seattle doesn't have a real ghetto persay, but I was wondering if there are any neighborhoods that should be avoided if possible.

I wouldn't say that there are any neighborhoods to avoid in their entirety, but there are parts of certain areas to avoid...
Within Seattle itself, parts of the University District, parts of Lake City, Aurora Avenue, parts of Belltown ( maybe it's just me, but I think of it as noisy and not terribly safe),most of Pioneer Square, parts of the Central District, parts of the Rainier Valley, and parts of the Eastern side of West Seattle.
Outside of the city limits: parts of Renton ( Renton Highlands behind Viet Wha), parts of Skyway, parts of Kent, parts of White Center, parts of Lynnwood, parts of Mountlake Terrace...

Mostly I agree with you, but I've never had a problem in Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace. I realize I'm not speaking for everyone and this is just anecdotal, but I'm a woman, and I go running by myself almost every day, usually in the dark, in all parts of MLT and Lynnwood. I live right on the Lynnwood/MLT border (from what I can tell, not the best part), and although it's cheaper than other areas, it doesn't seem to have a whole lot of crime. Your car might get broken into, but that happens all over the Seattle area. When it comes to safety, it's fine up here.

That would be a change of pace from phoenix. I don't go anywhere alone, because as a woman I have been hassled, honked at, and a couple times fallowed by vehicles.

White Center. Delridge and 17th, and Roxbury/Delridge. Scumville.

I'm curious as to what parts of the U District you feel should be avoided?

I think you'll really like the Seattle area, then. In Seattle, I've lived in Ravenna (near the U-District) and Pinehurst (just north of Northgate Mall), and I've also lived in Shoreline, south Everett (Silver Lake), and Mountlake Terrace. I've gone running alone in all those areas and never had problems, and there are tons of other great areas to live in.

University Way itself between around 42nd and 45th.

I don't think any part of the Seattle area is really dangerous...On University Way there are a fair number of pandhandling , scraggly young people, nicknamed " Ave rats", but I really don't think there's anywhere in these parts that you should really live in fear in. There are areas that are too noisy, or have panhandlers, or low income housing, or substandard housing, but nothing where violent crime should be much of a concern.

That's the best part of the Ave. I wouldn't hang out there after hours, but I'm cautious to do that anywhere. Most of the ave rats are harmless.
