My husband is looking at a job in Des Moines, WA and we are wondering if anyone can give us some information on the area. Schools, crime rates, etc. If it's a good or bad area, and if it's not the best area, are there any close cities or towns that would be better. We have 3 small children so any information would be helpful. Thanks!

I had a best friend that grew up in Des Moines, only a few blocks away from the Marina. Seriously those times I spent over there were so idyllic, I envy your kids if they grow up there. It is a safe town, but its better to be further away from Hwy 99.

As for schools, Highline school district is... okay... However for that area, you have Marvista elementary school, and Mt. Rainier HS, they are great!!! Mt. Rainier had the IB program. Pacific Middle School (PMS) was good.

Normandy Park is next door and is the more affluent (but affordable) area. You have Burien close by which is revitializing itself, also in the Highline SD. Woodmont/Redondo Beach/Federal way is down the road, beautiful area; I don't know about the schools (different school district)-- but you got the Saltwater State park and there's great shopping in Federal Way.

Default Des Moines

I would look into the federal way/twin lakes area. housing is inexpensive and schools are decent. There are also private schools close by.

PS IB is the international baccalaureate program

Thank you all for the information. We will look at all of the surrounding areas. Does anyone know about the drug problems around those areas. I understand there are problems everywhere you go, but it seems like Oregona and Washington have a big meth problem. I only ask because of my children growing older, and I want to make sure that they are raised in good areas with the least amount of drugs.
