Attending the Symphony - Frequently Asked Questions

The Symphony says "Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable!" Sounds good to me. I'm pretty much a business casual type these days.

The patron concourse with cafe and gift shop etc. is exactly like an airport terminal waiting area. A long ugly hallway with amenities on one side and airport lounge tables on the other. Lots of shiny flooring and brushed aluminum walls.

The interior atrium is more attractive but dull. The auditorium is brown. Brown brown brown. The carpets, walls, seat fabric, decor--it's all brown.

Acoustics are good. Tickets are expensive. The orchestra is ok, usual and competent but not overwhelming. I believe the Seattle symphony is currently looking for a new maestro. I hope they find someone with a little zip and tear. They need it.

However, the Seattle symphony is the only game in town. There is just the one symphony. You want symphony you're going to Benaroya. Gotta take what you can get around here.
You were right about the orchestra wanting a new directer. Ludovic Morlot has been named Music Director Designate. A lot of good things have been said about him. 2010-11 should be a great season!

I agree with a few of the posters - If I am going to pay $50 for a ticket, I want to feel like I am going somewhere classy and special, not the matinee at Alderwood.
The dress code has gone has gone down, while the ticket prices have gone up.

I love going to Benaroya Hall and hearing the Seattle Symphony. I too was a little shocked at girls with purple hair and combat boots and guys with faded jeans and sneakers. Come on Seattle.
