The McGuire Apartments was completed in 2001. Its tenants and ground floor retail spaces have been told to vacate the building as soon as possible because of corroded steel tension cables that are too costly to fix.

High-rise unsafe; hundreds uprooted

The sight of scaffolding placed around recent condo construction is nothing new for downtown--it seems like there has been a lot of shoddy construction and/or design in the recent condo booms, esp. with stucco enveloped buildings, but this is the first time I've heard of a building being abandoned because it was cost prohibitive to repair. Just shocking.

It's bad enough for the renters being displaced, could you imagine if this were condos? I shudder to think what I'd do if a major defect came to light in my building.

The property owners have a lawsuit pending (naturally) against the general contractor and the architect. It should be interesting to see what information comes to light!

No mention of Chinese Cables that I could find.

One of the articles mentioned lack of proper weather proofing...

This is one of the reasons why I absolutely positively will NOT live in a house or abode built since 2000. From 2000 to 2008 it was a period of credit bubble-driven building frenzy leading to shoddy construction. It's a little scary for me because in 2006 when I first came to Seattle I considered moving there!

I agree. I think even a few years earlier ( maybe '97? on) there was this frenzy to build like crazy, and a lot of very shoddily built construction.
