I grew up and lived in Seattle from the Late 30s thru 2000.
I still remember those early years when we had an occasional storm or two that left a couple feet of snow. We also had one bad year in the early 60's that seem to last forever.
Yes it was worse back then and I have read many posts of other western areas that things have changed to milder winters as a rule.
My thing as a youngster back then for spare money was cutting lawns in the summer and shovel sidewalks in the winter. Along with that I gathered stray golf balls and waited over the rightfield fence at Rainier Stadium for home run balls to sell.
What a great life I had in those days.
Anyway there is usually less snow now then back then, but far more people to screw things up. I guess I could say overall things are far worse now when it snows.

Greg Nickels probably owes his early retirement from public life due to the vagaries of our winter weather.

And the fact that he gave himself a B+ for handling the snow emergency?

All I know is that after enduring this evening's horrible commute , I don't think I'm going to go to work tomorrow.

Yes indeed he does - and the same may well prove true for current Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn after the traffic mess of last night. There's likely to be a HUGE outcry. Some folks were STILL stuck on the roads a 1 AM (or even later).

As I said in another thread, when any moisture on the road freezes the same thing is going to happen anywhere. I've seen it in many places that deal with much more snow and ice than we do, it is not UNIQUE to Seattle.
