I haven't been there so I don't really have an opinion, but I do remember an incident a few years back where commuters were yelling at a woman standing on a bridge and contemplating suicide to go ahead and jump so she will be out of their way. I have also heard other stories. What do you think??

There are rude people in every city, but I think L.A. has more rude people than Seattle. We're number one in cold, pretentious blonde twenty-somethings.

Default Rude? I don't think so.

The Pacific Northwest has the nicest, politest people out of any urbanized region in the country. Seattle is where you're most likely to run into 'rude' people but that's just because it's a big city. Drivers are quite courteous there and people are just civilized in general. I lived just a few blocks from where that woman was encouraged to jump and I think that was just an awful anomaly. I don't know where you're from but I hear that people from California or the urban Northeast find northwesters and Seattleites very nice buy not very open or outgoing. So I wouldn't try to dispute someone if they found them shy or anti-social but they certainly aren't rude.

It was an isolated incident. People here are very polite but can be a little reserved at times compared to much of the country. If you want rude, you should see the Northeast!

Yeah people aren't rude here. Just reserved. It's annoying but it won't raise your blood pressure.

San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oceanside, El Cajon, El Cerrito, El Centro, San Diego, Seattle. These are the big cities I am familiar with to one degree or another and out of all of them, Seattle is without peer when it comes to politeness.

There's a thread here talking about how polite people in Seattle really are.

There are always a few clowns who yell "jump"...it's not indicative of the population in general and those clowns reside in every city.

It's fascinating how internet rumor drives so many perceptions.

Philadelphians are rude. When Richie Allen played the outfield for the Phillies, he had to wear a batting helmet while playing the field, to protect his head from things being thrown at him by fans. That's the same city where Santa Claus made a halftime appearance at an Eagles game, had snowballs thrown at him, and he got booed.
That wouldn't happen here.

I grew up near Seattle and have lived in NYC for the past 15 years. Although I find people in NYC friendlier than people in Seattle, I agree with what almost everyone here said: people in Seattle aren't rude - they are just reserved compared to people in most other major cities. In general they aren't outgoing. Strangers won't talk to you (unless they are "off"). And when people are annoyed they just get passive-aggressive as opposed to plain old aggressive.

But most drivers are very courteous. People will say hello to you at the store. Things like that. I think it's just a preference. Me, I like strangers talking to me and telling me what they think. Some people might find that rude.
