Based on this very rough model, a five year old would be expected to live to about 48.2 years of age.

I still say that conditional probability plays a big roll in the question and it's not simply a matter of fitting it to a typical curve. But there is the "get 'er done" linear approach: 48.2 years of age.
OK, glad to have a person with some skills on board, even though they seem to be somewhat misdirected. The dead horse was: "what is the life expectancy of a person who did not suffer infant death." An infant is one year old. So we get that a five year old in 1850 could be expected to live to 48.2 years. OK, interesting. But what does your formula say a 1 year old will live to. If you say 44 years of age or less, I will be laughing so loud that you will be able to hear me in ND. (See post 35 above).

Just for giggles, I ran myself through MoneyCentral's little life expectancy calculator. Given the real me, I can expect to live to 90 or more. If I switched only my temperament to "aggressive" I lose 6 years. If I never smoked, I'd only gain 4 years. So, I ran it again, as if I never smoked but was an aggressive bi-atch... guess what... life expectancy 90 years. Interesting little sidetrack

Great new! I only have 5 more years to live based on the MSN calculator. That solves my retirement issues.

Being female is good for something Of course, not having had any children and getting toward the end of my childbearing years bumped up my life expectancy tremendously!! Being a walking incubator is apparently seriously bad for your health

I think I got hammered by having bad parents and siblings.

I think I got a pass on some bad behaviors because of hardy genetic stock... all the females on both sides of the family lived past 80 for at least the last 4 generations (unless my mom, sis or I kick it early). There appears to be a suprising number of statisitcal improbabilities in my family tree... not counting the ones who died (young) of misfortune, a high percentage appear to have survived diseases and lifestyles that should've killed em way earlier than they eventually departed

Women who never had children are at a higher risk for breast cancer.

Not a cheap shot at motherhood either, just an attempt at levity for a very serious subject. Pregnancy and giving birth is extremely hard on a woman's body.

Not envious in the least... I am not good mommy material, which is why I made sure I could never become one.

You are to be highly commended for your self-evaluation and for then acting on it. If only most people were that rational, then this world would be a far, far better place. Sometimes it seems that the very people least suited for parenthood have the most children.
