A friend of mine who is a marine read my post and laughed. He said that now I knew I could survive. He said he was taught in the marines that it was mental toughness that determined who survived.

He told me that he thought he was tough until he went to Iraq and got shot at. He said that, in his experience, courage was facing your fear, accepting that you were afraid, then going ahead and doing what had to be done.

One thing I forgot to mention originally was the difficulty we had with the insurance company. I wanted to have a 30 day supply of all our medication. They couldn't imagine a scenario where civilization would shut down for more than a few days! We ended up paying for it ourselves.

After Katrina was over - we got a check the insurance company for the medication!

Let's face it - of all the people who "should have" evacuated but didn't, there are two categories: Those who could have but didn't and those who really couldn't have been expected to be able to (disabled, maybe no car, maybe no family to help either, etc.). You have done a very good job of making a case for the second group, as have others. And about this second group, North Beach Person is silent. Except for this silence, I think all the points he made were excellent, as he was essentially talking about the first group. I think a lot of the disagreement in this thread is because of a failure to specify which group we are talking about - I know at least one of my earlier posts suffered this defect.

It is a human tendency to think of others in terms of ourselves. If we have a car, if we have enough of an emergency fund not to worry about a week in a motel several hundred miles away, if we are capable of rational thought about preparedness and planning, then we think all those traits are normal and we need posts such as your earlier ones to remind us that not all people have them. After all, being wheelchair bound is only one way to be disabled - other people are mentally disabled in various ways. Sure, government failed those people, but it is hard to imagine how to serve them correctly. How can government serve people who (for example) are paranoid about government being the enemy and assume that everything coming from government is lies, including the code requirement to anchor propane tanks? And to make all this more complicated, sometimes government even is the enemy.
First, my apologies for being gone so long. Personal situations made it necessary.

Second, I completely agree with Escort Rider, and my apologies to North Beach Person if I misunderstood your post. There is no remedy for stupidity (as clearly shown by your pics). Those who CAN evacuate, but do not, deserve what they may get.

As Escort Rider clearly pointed out, we were talking about two entirely different groups.

With regards to all and enmity to none,

-- Nighteyes

I learned a very important lesion from Hurricane Katrina. And that is just how bad and oppressive our government’s become.

They went around and disarmed peaceful law abiding citizens and took their legally owned firearms away from them with strong handed military force. Watch the short video posted below. That was scary. I’m not some wussy. I’m a grown man that served in the Marine Corps, and I wept because of how our rights have been taken away from us and our own troops were being used against peaceful citizens engaged in lawful activities. I can’t believe this is what our country’s come to.

I'm sorry, but I can't contribute anything to this thread about Katrina. After being stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., which is right on the coast, I made my mind up that I'll never live within 50 miles of any coastline where Hurricanes frequent.

The worse part of the National Guard and police actions was that they said they were just following orders!

In any disaster, I would take my ammo and weapons, place them in PVC pipe, and bury them in the backyard when the National Guard and any out-of-town police appeared. I would have the hole dug and ready. A little tree trash on top and they would be none the wiser.
