Freeze dried food can be eaten straight out of the bag. Some of them are actually better that way. But you are right, one will need water along with them. They will rehydrate with cold water, it just takes longer. One of the places I've bought from sells freeze dried raw meat. It gets rehydrated over about a half hour with cold water and then gets grilled. The sizzling, smoking, and delicious aromas of the meat on the fire really get the saliva going. The steaks are best rehydrated with beef broth instead of water.
