If you want to use a pressure lamp the best are really petromax (now brit-lyte) The older original ones IMHO are the best...

Wow, arcti, you're my hero! You're like the McGyver of lamp building! and I like your collection.

I wondered about trying olive oil in a lamp too. I read this book about the "history of the night" and it had all kinds of cool info about lighting from the late classical period/early middle ages to the advent of electricity. there was a History Channel show based on this book a couple years ago, but the book was much more informative.
