I made the assumption that the OP was not a billionaire. This is an apples and oranges comparison. On one of the Hawaiian main islands that biggest threats during a SHTF situation is the other people on the island and the lack of security. A billionaire can set up a island with security measures and his own power and other utilities to sustain a comfortable living. I have spent some time on Maui and the only place on Maui for an off grid living with security would be on the backsides of the volcanos but if you have to BO there would be no place to go and in a short amount of time the locals would know where you live and I'm sure you would have some unwelcome visitors.

I agree; Hawaii wouldn't even be considered.

This is not true at all. While the largest land owner is the state, followed by the US government and then King Kamehameha schools, there is still a whole bunch of land in private ownership. Real estate is very expensive on Oahu because that's where the majority of people live, but it is very easy to find affordable property on the Big Island. One could get a decent three bedroom house in my subdivision for under $250,000.

It is also quite easy ( and safe) to do off the grid living on the big island. Thousands of people get their water by using catchment tanks, and many of us get our electricity from the sun and the wind. And this is in normal subdivisions, not some crime ridden hell hole.

Just curious why you picked Kauai. It's my least-favorite island.

Why? I ask, because we're going there shortly, and when I asked my friends what their favorite island was, Kauai ranked very high for natural beauty and was not very touristy. Also, apparently that's the stunning island where the breathtaking scenes in Jurassic Park were filmed.

Outside of one friend who really only likes to sit at a pool and sip umbrella rinks, and also visit tourist traps, I got unanimous recommendations for Kauai as the best destination.

I'm curious why that among ALL the islands is your least favorite.
