Okay, I'll start off by saying that this is partly tongue-in-cheek, and partly serious (since people often "miss" when I'm being satirical).

I consider myself a prepper, and I'm also politically a conservative-libertarian. So I listen to a lot of talk radio, specifically Sirius XM Patriot. For those who don't know, Patriot is a talk station with all conservative and libertarian hosts, mostly people who are for small government, low taxes, individual freedom, individual responsibility, constitutional rights, especially second amendment rights, and a "Judeo-Christian-informed," if not actually Christian, values and morals. Many listeners are preppers to some degree or another, since these political social, and moral values overlap a great deal.

So in the middle of all these political talk shows, you get commercials, of course. That's the free market, and I love it. It makes sense that companies who want to target this market will buy advertising time on this channel. So these commercials totally make sense showing up during conservative talk radio shows:
  • companies that assist you in paying off your debt, getting out of debt
  • companies that sell precious metals as investment and "insurance"
  • companies that sell identity protection
  • Companies that sell computer security and data back-up
  • life insurance companies
  • food storage suppliers
  • makers of safes and gun safes
All of these companies and products seem to fit well with both conservatives and/ preppers. So far, so good.

But....

You will also hear a lot, way too many, commercials about:
  • "male enhancement" products
  • testerone-increasing products
  • clinics that address male sexual dysfunction
  • prescription drugs for impotence
  • herbal or non-prescription drugs for impotence
All I'm thinking when I hear this is: "okay, the damned world is going to hell, the middle east and parts of Europe are on fire, the US government is getting bigger and bigger and overstepping its established boundaries, taking away more and more of our rights, the dollar is almost worthless and getting even more worthless, more and more people are unemployed and falling out of the unemployment numbers altogether, we need to store up food and other supplies for survival, North Korea is setting off missiles.....

...and there must be a lot of guys who are more concerned with their schlongs.

I just don't get it. At first I thought this was just very poor marketing on the part of these companies. Of course listeners like me who are worried about really important issues--issues of personal survival, spiritual survival, and the survival of freedom as we know it--would not be concerned about sex so much. Right?

Sure sex is fun, enjoyable, sometimes VERY enjoyable, and quite useful in producing families and warding off the cold in winter, but when you're someone worried about the larger issues, I don't think "getting some" is really at the front of your mind. Am I alone here?

Then I thought, well maybe this is just a phenomenon on this particular satellite radio station. But then I noticed similar ads running during survival/firearms/conservative political shows on TV and other radio stations.

Then to top it all off, I'm on a few e-mail newsletter lists for preppers. So I get e-newsletters with a lot of ads for food storage, gun concealment, survival gear, heirloom non-hybrid gardens, and other stuff I love...but they also like to bombard me with ads for "performance enhancement supplements" and "secret male-enhancing drugs that the government doesn't want you to know about."

Is there something about our prepper demographic that makes us more likely to be penis-obsessed that I'm missing????

Frankly, if I were a guy, and a prepper, and I lost that "need" for sex, I'd be like "Whew! That's a relief! Now I can devote more attention to target practice and canning!" I certainly wouldn't be looking for a pill to bring it back! Plus, if I lost that "need," I'd actually free up a lot of space where I'm currently storing batteries!

My theory: Biologically, when an organism is stressed, it attempts to reproduce to insure survival of the species. In my experience, emergency workers are highly sexed! So... it makes sense that serious preppers are somehow stressed and BELIEVE doomsday is near. So maybe the advertisers are on to something.

Well as a Prepper, and a guy, I can tell you, that I'm bombarded with ads from adWords/adSense (Google), adCenter (MS/FB), and any other heuristic advertizing algorithm, with firearms, potency products, singles networks (I do object when they give me over 60's singles though), and currently chainsaws . If I were a potential serial killer these things might make perfect sense, including the chainsaws.

The best series had to be the time I saw the following three advertisements, I could add three inches to my manhood, get Viagra or Cialis and meet thousands of singles in the neighborhood, which was interesting since I have about 20 neighbors (nearly all married, all of the women are married) in 100 square miles, maybe they're bussing singles in, or they're talking about non-human singles I don't know, and I don't want to find out. However it did form a nice progression I thought.

Anyway my suspicion is that with prep being so attached to certain male activities, and the general male concerns with certain other activities, this results in a "positive" result for advertizing male sexual concerns with prepping topics. Since all advertizing now leans heavily on heuristic algorithms and neural networks to buy advertizing space, it's no surprise that these are also being advertized on various media channels other than the Internet, given their expected audience stereotypes.

I don't know if that was the answer you wanted, but it's the most likely explanation. Sorry if I took any magic out of it for you.

It makes perfect sense.

It would be trollish of me to tell you why in this forum however.

If a mod says its ok for me to answer the question then I will.

Yes, it does free up a lot of time for more important things. And it is somewaht of a relief. That's what happens when you start getting older.

Perhaps these advertisers are banking on only male teens making it through the hell we are forging. It makes sense because they are statistically the healthiest, have the longest lifespan ahead of them, and are the most likely to come through alive. And of course, they are the ones with pretty much only one thing on their minds. Sex. Yes, I remember those days. Why they would need any "help" in that area, however, is somewhat of a mystery.

I believe that the demographic being targeted is the baby boomers -- middle aged into early senior years. They seem to be the biggest audience for the conservative, Republican/Libertarian, anti-government, gun-buying, gold-buying, anti-Federal Reserve group out there. I'm sure there are lots of younger people into this, also, esp if you look at the Ron Paul crowd.

Don't be so quick to assume that any aging male who's "lost it" so to speak, is happy or complacent about that state of affairs. Being a male baby-boomer myself, I can vouch for the interest of those who have, uh, "lost it" in gaining it back. Guys talk a lot among themselves. In our neighborhood, there is actually a 90-year old man who still "does it" with his wife. She wishes he'd call a time out, but he still wants to be sure it works!!!

Another consideration is that oftimes these talk show hosts have no idea what sorts of commercials are being aired on the local stations that are broadcasting their shows. Clark Howard, for instance, who has a financial help talk show, was flabbergasted when a caller complained about a debt-reduction scam (as he felt it was) advertising during Clark's show. So, just consider that not all of these ads are specifically targeting that group of listeners. Even the advertisers sometimes don't know during what shows their ads will be aired. But they probably don't care. They know the aging male demographic -- of whatever political persuasion -- will be lurking around there somewhere!

This is it, right here.

It's strictly marketing. Those companies know who is listening to those shows. The typical "prepper" is a 50+ male, the same as the typical male enhancement customer. Just like the Cialis commercial says, Lord knows a prepper wants to "be ready"!!!

Hell, if me or my husband get to that point just shoot us. If we didn't want sex anymore we'd just as soon not survive the apocolypse. (Insert smily face here).
