prescription sunglasses, with strap. Surgical tubing, a bit of dental floss, pen and pad, soap, bug dope, high grade tape (duct tape sucks) parachute cord, spoon, comb, mirror, monfilament fishline, a few treble hooks, trotline and gill net made of same, a couple of snares, (1 small, one deer-sized), "earvalve" style earplugs, 2 compasses, one a "pin on" model and one is part of the matchcase, (Campmor) sewing awl, with 2 needles and a bobbin of waxed linen thread, mousetrap, lots of survival info, either on a solar powered tablet or microfiche, some 1/10th oz gold coins, plastic bags, with wire ties, That may seem like a lot of stuff, but it is all very compact, mulitple use, very hard to find (or make adequate field-expedient versions of it). Total wt about 3 lbs, value, (if shtf) immeasurable. Stuff happens, folks, and you have to make repairs, create things "in the field", and so on. Best to have the stuff to do those things with. A few ozs of prevention, it is, to prevent your having to risk being shot as you try to create other ways of doing the same job(s)
There are several other subdivisions, of course, like:"firemaking, light, tools, "extra" clothing, sleepgear, a bit of food, some spices, salt, non-hybrid garden seeds (suitable for your area) shelter gear, medical-gear, water, ( 6 lbs or more, plus a means of carrying it, and making it potable) cooking pot and lid, carrying gear (ie, pack, harness, frame) All this "non-combat" gear adds up, and even if you know how to make do really well and have the best gear, it totals 30 lbs. That is on top of the guns, ammo, armor, gun accessories (sling, spare mags, sound-suppressor, bipod, spare parts, scope, cleaning gear). You dare not, if shtf, even leave camp more than 100m or so without nearly all of this stuff, because if you get "cut off", by enemies, fire or whatever, you are soon going to die for the lack of it, in many parts of the US and in typical field-conditions. Much of the "non-gun" gear is every bit as vital as guns and ammo, guys. Lack of sleep, exposure, inadequate hygiene, etc, may take weeks to kill you, as vs a few seconds after you get shot, but you end up just as dead.
Tooth care can be delayed a bit, and you can make a toothbrush, use a bit of your salt as "toothpaste".
toothbrush and a small box or bag of baking soda makes for a decent toothpaste. I have been brushing with it all my life, and no cavities or teeth problems.
You can't carry the kitchen sink. there are many, many things that are necessary, for later, and many more that are "great to have", but you can't make them part of the BOB. They can be made, or found, or bartered for later, or dug up from your caches, etc.
