It probably would take a nuclear detonation in our atmosphere (space) to simultaneously emit a gamma
burst that would knock out our American electrical grid or a major solar flare. Such a burst could incap
acitate any secondary power generators . The former cause comes on the heels that 10 countries have
nuclear weapons and of the ten Korea and Iran seem to pose the largest threat being mentally disfunctional.
The later solar flare consideration is a result of numerous "close calls" precipitating a need to "prepare"!
In a congressional study in 2004 headed up by congressman Roscoe Bartlett it was determined that a
severe coronal mass injection could result in the loss of upwards to 90% of the population within one year.
The lowest I've heard from two other experts is 80%. Many factors created this gloomy outcome but it's
primarily focused on all city dwellers ( most Americans are suffering from affluencia and a denial mindset
albeit a case of disinterest if not "happy bunny goes to town mentality". That's a prescription for their
eventual lack of survival ability (if a squirrel in Ohio can knock out a portion of the NY grid then ...hmmmm). Here is a list of factors and outcome (samplings):
An EMP burst could shut down all electrical power including computers (government, business, vehicles (cars
16 wheeler suppliers, cell pones, power to homes gas station pumps, aircraft all medical facilities, food and
farm processing leaving walking, bicycles, row boats (kayak's), horses, mules, dog sleds.
Downtime 1-2 years (Most spare parts are out of Germany and by the Swiss manufacturers )
Prisons would have riots without electricity ,Nurses/staff at hospitals could not or would not report to work
or Nursing homes (their own families in jeopardy and no transportation ) . Marshall law. looting, house in-
vasions for provisions ,murder, body removal /disposal issues, winter clothing demands.
No access to medications, very limited if any FEMA/Red Cross/Police (forget it) FEMA has 1 billion dollars
of emergency food stored primarily in the Southwest ,but getting it to you would be unrealistic.
Back in the 1800's we had a solar flair that actually melted the Morse code hard wires. Most of the countries communications wires had to be replaced. The people with electrical backgrounds reading this will understand that if that happen today nothing would safe.
It is only a matter of time untill it happens again and it will be very serious.

One advantage we have now is the ability to predict solar storms. It's a small window, but utility companies could take some of their equipment off line till the storm passed. We could also actually invest some resources (money) in strengthening our ridiculously overloaded and increasingly feeble power grid, but no politician has the stones to tell the anti-tax crowd that it might cost everyone a few extra bucks to do it.
A massive CME is an extremely rare event and an electrical blackout from a detonated nuclear weapon would probably be one of the more minor consequences of WWIII. What's more likely is that someone, somewhere is going to plug in a vacuum cleaner and that extra 6 amp load will be the straw that broke the camel's back.
I don't see it as a fresh start when you consider how many people will perish. When it comes right down to it, we'd lose some of our best and brightest minds at a time when we need them the most. Brainiac scientists usually seem to congregate near cities and universities where their expertise is in demand. We all know that city survival is less likely as there would be more people fighting over fewer resources. Regardless of how many survival skills and supplies we might have, our chance of survival will lessen dramatically.
The worst case scenario prediction for loss in a widespread EMP situation is estimated to be around 75%-80% in the first year or two after the event. I've spoken to scientists, emergency managers and others who believe that the situation would be that serious and others who think that many modern vehicles would survive the attack and still operate, though certain functions would be fried. There are a lot of opinions about EMP's and solar flares out there.

Nowadays electronic circuits are much smaller. A much lesser EMP would do much more damage.

That would leave seventy-five million people or more, too many, but civil war would pare that number.
Since 10% of Americans are alcoholic I plan to distill alcohol. Lasting just two years will be child's play in the interior Northwest for the survivalist who, by definition, lives outside of the few big cities. That's why we've stored food and arms, not to mention making some other preparations.
I'm already at my BOL; bring it on.
