What coming apocalypse?
We live in a more peaceful time than ever before in history. It's easier today than ever before for a younger person to make a good life for him/herself and their family without working dawn to dusk every day. Rejecting modern conveniences to an extreme isn't freedom. Having to grow my own food is a form of slavery, not freedom in 99% of cases. My most valuable resource is my time. Growing my own food is a waste of time, given what's available with modern conveniences. Why would I subject myself to that? Knowing HOW to grow my own food if need be is useful. Deciding to do it day in and day out is less so.
Self-sufficiency is needed to the extent it can respond to a realistic scenario. That includes a family having enough food/water/batteries to survive two weeks on their own, possibly. Beyond that are scenarios so unrealistic it would be a waste of time to think about. Throughout history people have said the world is ending and society is going downhill. In spite of that, we are living in the most peaceful, prosperous times in all of history. People often live in the past as an excuse to justify not living in the present, honestly. It's a form of escape (and there's nothing wrong with it. If it works for you, great, it's just not an inherently better way to live).
I understand your viewpoint, and respect your opinion. We can agree to disagree, given I don't see this conversation going any other way.

The eighties saw a ravenous hunger for knowledge coupled with a willingness to devote the necessary time to that pursuit. Even a future American president and his wife joined the throng at the beginning of the twentieth century. Here are just a few examples of that period's erudition. They are all magnificent.
This very neat item dates from 1922 or later, but people were using similar instruments in 1880. It's a perfect companion for a treadle-driven lathe. The classic tachometers do the same work without the need of a watch. They're also appropriate for your old-time shop. Just don't use the battery-driven garbage with plastic cases.
I've always loved treadle power because of its self-contained power. This material treats Barnes machine tools. They're fascinating and can do the job today. Barnes made metalworking as well as woodworking machinery.
I'd say medically many would want to go back prior to WWII. many lived in pain then at the least.Good health which often means care is worth a lot over fictional looking at past times of only what appeals to a person and ignoring the rest. When I was a kid and saw those wooden teeth of Washington's it just made me think of now uncomfortable life was for him in eating as example.sawa documentary where they showed st why many driank heavily and eve used strong narcotics in earlier times; it was life and the pains in many cases.
Washington didn’t have wooden teeth. That’s a myth.
How are those 1880s looking now? Better than ever, I should think.
Is everyone enjoying 2020?
Looking back a few years:

That could be coming with covid. This sounds a lot like the expectation to wear masks to "protect" others who mistreat their health.

Now we are seeing the consequences of allowing this to go on unchecked in schools for decades. This marxist-derived ideology has infected mainstream society.

Up until a few weeks ago, I would have strongly agreed with you, and with my previous post.
Now I don't feel that way. None of this is about a virus. When you get within 100 days of an election, everything is about the election. The masks, the social distancing (gawd how I hate that phrase!), the stimulus payments, the continuing lockdowns in blue states, the rumors of Wave 2, the school closures, the 'Warp Speed' vaccine. All of it is political BS.
They will not have a vaccine within 100 days, and after the election, we will have bigger issues to deal with than a vaccine. Government has proven itself to be institutionalized idiocy. They can't do anything right, and forcibly vaccinating 340 million people for a virus that has already mutated, is just a bit beyond their capabilities. Anyone who wants to can fall between the cracks.
Actually, I doubt that there will be a vaccine for this coronavirus, or any other coronavirus. At least not an effective one.
I don't think Cancel Culture will cease or even die down after this election year. Their goals are far-reaching. They have made considerable headway in the last 10+ years. They have used coronavirus to their advantage, but they aren't the only ones taking advantage of it.
We are witnessing an American cultural revolution. Marxists believe that their goals can only be achieved by overthrowing existing social conditions and traditions, and that is what's happening. Some politicians already support it - donating bail money for rioters, destroying statues, defunding police, destroying family, individuality, the past, becoming thought police, renaming buildings and streets, demonizing white people, etc. Too many people are afraid to speak up. This can't be voted away while each generation continues to be indoctrinated with this ideology.
BLM, for example, is not about race or police brutality. Its founders are self-identified "trained Marxists" and people, including politicians, are caving to it left and right. People think they are supporting a just cause because Marxists always frame it that way. Just like many think they are supporting a good cause by forcing masks that are scientifically proven to be mostly useless. Mainstream media also promotes a cultural revolution. Most of them were indoctrinated with the ideology too.

Agreed.
Do you know of any nation that was armed, yet overrun by communists? This is a sincere question. I don't know of any, but I have never been an eager student of history.
