I'm a *nut* about history and am in the midst of writing a new book which has required some study of the Spanish Flu and the parallels are very disturbing.
Check out the Sweating Sickness of the 1500s. Our society has been very lucky over the last century.
I'm now changing my winter plans - no interest in flying down to the Southeastern US with everything in the news real or not (driving perhaps, but not going to fly as it would only take one screwed up at risk person or one paranoid stewardess to cause a problem on a plane ruining my day... or life).
Well, I don't fly anymore, but I wouldn't even if I did. I live outside of Seattle and if we have a case here, I will be taking even more precautions. The 30 day supply thread got me thinking, and I'm quietly stocking up on things I would need if I had to be in quarantine for 21-30 days. I'm not panicking, just keeping abreast of any news updates, and thinking about what do I need to do if ebola comes out west.
We have a four day weekend coming up and had contemplated taking a trip somewhere. I am paying close attention and if we do decide to go somewhere we will definitely drive. Yes, I will still have contact with the outside world but at least I won't be stuck on a plane with a few hundred strangers with unknown backgrounds. Waiting to see how this plays out.
I was planning on sending my 2 daughters to see their mom in Wisconsin by plane for thanksgiving, now I am going to drive them there and stay for 7 days and drive them back.
I'm also glad we live out in the country, not too close to big cities or congestion. Lots of fresh air and sunshine and can get outdoors most of the year. I don't like crowds any time.
I can't stand using those hand sanitizers though. Years ago a doctor told me it was healthier to just use soap and water. Something about losing your resistance to fighting off germs on your own.
And Rosemary, I also understand geometric progression and have watched the numbers from this outbreak since it hit the news months ago - the same day our doctor friends were flying back from Guinea, thank God they were 200 miles away and never got sick.
Howie Mandel wears gloves and has for years. He refuses to shake hands. People used to think that was silly and an over reaction.
Several years ago I started disinfecting my hands every time I left a store or got into my car. I wash my hands at work as much as possible, nothing overboard, or use disinfectant. I don't shake hands. I can't remember the last time I had the flu.
I got strep throat last year and I have no idea how I got it. I work at home. I really am not around people that much and family/friends I had seen didn't have strep. The only thing I could think of was the grocery store. Ever since then I have used the disinfectant wipes they provide to clean the shopping cart handle. That's my best guess as to how I got it.
My husband was saying today that he wonders if people who hate America could be bringing Ebola to the US intentionally and we just don't know it yet. Scary thought.
