Humans are omnivores that can and do eat just about anything.
Many American Indian tribes ate dog routinely. When you are hungry and in a survival situation it's amazing what you will eat to stay alive.
When the Corps of Discovery, Lewis and Clark were on their expedition, they noted that they ate a lot of dog and horse meat when there was nothing else available.
Fox and coyote are too tough and stringy for regular eating, but beaver, bobcat, even mountain lion are pretty tasty.

Hawaiians ate dogs and other folks living in Hawaii did up until about forty to fifty years ago as far as I know. One of our neighbors still has recipes for dog and they used to eat them when she was a small kid. She's in her late seventies now and doesn't eat dogs anymore. They ate special dogs, though, called "poi" dogs that were fed a special diet. She also said the black ones were best or they should at least have a black nose to be tasty.
Aren't guinea pigs called "cuy" or some such when they are eaten? Rabbits are sometimes pets and yet very tasty, too. Maybe we just eat a lot of cows since they don't make good pets?
If things go South, you can bet all those American pets that get treated like human children will end up on the spit for their owners in short order. Hunger has a way of "changing the rules" really quick.
I have plenty of steers on my property and a nice large walk in freezer big enough for 4 sides of beef to be stored at once. my older daughter likes to call the steers her pets too.
