I'd have to argue that Minnesota would be one of the worst.

High Cost of Living
High Taxes
VERY Liberal Govt that wont leave you alone
Mosquitoes are AWFUL, U of Cal did a study on mosquitoes a few years ago and chose MN to study them because they are so prevalent here
Short growing season
Harsh weather (temps range from 104 in summer to -40 in winter)
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes
Cold weather

On the bright side, there is lots of available land with open spaces here, fishing, trapping, and hunting is amazing

Or maybe you know anything about China? Can you clearly say that chinese middle class lives worse than american middle class (or chinese poor people live much worse than american poor people)?
They are absolutely poorer.

GDP PPP per capita in the US is $56k, vs $26k in Russia and $13k in China.

In such scenario, average Joe's trouble would be to find job to get enough money to pay bills, but not massive starvation. In such scenario, being around a big city would be a plus (government will do whatever it takes to have big cities supplied).

However, the question as I understood it asked about total collapse with no government around.... So, I gave my best try there
Right, I agree. Whatever you could dream up that would cause it, if the US descends into chaos and starvation, the rest of the "civilized" world would likely do the same.

Anybody who thinks you'd need to go "survivalist" in response to a financial collapse is delusional.

How does GDP PPP relate to normal person life? Majority of Russians own their apartments/houses, have 1-2 cars, buy same clothes from the same China for 10 times cheaper, have their food grown locally. Their expenses are structured totally differently than here in US. Middle class families travel once a year for vacation. They pay 12% income tax and not 25-30%, and most have free basic medical insurance (which is reasonably good, btw).

Even complete fall of the currency wouldn't be a total collapse for either country. Besides, I'd argue that Russian Rouble is backed by national economy and need for the currency more than by the reserves of Central Bank (huh, I remember times when those reserves were near 0, and the currency was still accepted everywhere - there was no alternative, other than barter, which was also acceptable form of payment but had its own problems).

Purchasing power parity. In theory it corrects for the buying power of local currencies.

Russia and China both have lower gini coefficients which would indicate less income disparity, but that still isn't going to make up the difference. There are a whole lot of people in the US living at the Russian median living standard.

Hawaii is a top choice. Except for Oahu the land and ocean are capable of supporting the current population. That means fewer people need to die, which is nice. I think most people would prefer the climate compared to... well, just about anywhere.

You will however need to deal with the Oahu refugees, which could be pretty ugly.
