Forty below keeps the riff-raff out. MN is good. Actually, just about anywhere that's not a major metro in flyover country is good.

I'd argue upstate New York, or maybe Wisconsin/Minnesota/Michigan. Plenty of fresh water, good soil, moderate climate. Also close to Canada if needed, and I think populated enough with skilled people & civic institutions/community groups (without being overpopulated) that these areas are less likely to descend into complete lawlessness like truly remote areas could.

moderate climate, up NORTH? lol. yeah, you'll just LOVE having to cut all that wood, with axe and buck saw, to keep from dying at -20F wading thru snow up to your chin, etc. Having to cut thru 2 ft of ice to get drinkng water, or melt same, 4 whole months of growing season, animals GONE for 6 months of the year (hibernating or migrated). nuh-uh, man.

Why would you think Alaska is a good spot? Maybe Southeast Alaska, but the rest of the state gets ridiculous cold in the winter. Yes, there's some hunting but it's a limited resource. Same with fishing. Farming or gardening is limited. And everything has to come by barge from Seattle, or by air, or over the road from Canada.
I live here in Alaska. And if there's a serious SHTF, my first move is to figure out how to get out of here.

almost nobody is going further than the ONE supply of gas that they start with. Possible exception for off road motorcycles. You can set up a bike to cover over 1000 miles, fairly easily, with some 5 gallon 'jerrycans' of gas on board. Best have a wirecutter, and NVD goggles for nighttime travel, cause the highways and roads are going to be full of roadblocks and ambushes.

I don't like CA, cause it's very hard to get a CCW gun permit there and they regulate what guns you can buy. the San Andreas Fault is a concern, too, as is the cost of living (for living there NOW).
In a SHTF situation are you really going to worry about CCW? The police will most likely be your enemy. Make sure you have enough ammo.

You guys have fun on your campout.

ccw concern is for NOW. If shtf, I will be carrying the rifle, and the 9mm will still be concealed in the front pants pocket rig.
