You're vastly overestimating the difficulty of patching.

What about clothing?
Do you know how to darn socks?
If you tear your jeans, do you know how to make a good long lasting repair?
Have you saved enough assorted materials to make a patch for nearly anything?
Do you know how to hand sew that patch in place once you get it cut to size?
Do you have a goodly supply of thread, needles, and pins?
How many people even have a darning egg?
How many people know what a darning egg IS?

The thought arose because this morning DW found a sock with a hole in it, and, of course, threw it away. When the bottom drops out of things, that may not be an acceptable option anymore! A quick trip to Target for some new socks may not be something one can do!
I sure couldn't cope with it. I think the skills involved died out with my mother's generation!

Edit: Another thing to think about: If the crisis happens to last a long time, can you spin wool or raw cotton? Can you weave fabric or make felt? Can you tan hides then cut and sew it into trousers and shirts? What will you be wearing next year at this time?
Just a few things to think about while you are preparing for the worst!

Wish Grandpa was alive!
I remember my Dad talking about his father, they grew up in rural Virginia in the early part of last century---dad was born 1919. His father used to cobble shoes, among other skills. Churned butter, butchered hogs, raised chickens, the whole bit. They used to watch The Waltons and say how far off they were from reality!

Yep, I'm prepared! I saved my Spinning Wheel

UMwall: University of Michigan Classifieds | Vintage Little Red Spinning Wheel

Even remember the instructions---spin and loop and then you pull......

I thought this was a joke thread. Darning socks and patching jeans? Really? That's what you would be concerned about?

Agreed. Clothes? I think the Neiman Marcus cocktail dress dept will probably survive the looters.

Am I prepared? Probably more than most but not enough to survive long, probably. Unless we can grab some tanks.

The reason may be "brakes" - as in braking the "velocity of money" that hides the "big whoops!"
. . .
FRB: How much U.S. currency is in circulation?
Q: How much U.S. currency is in circulation?
A: There was approximately $1.34 trillion in circulation as of January 7, 2015, of which $1.29 trillion was in Federal Reserve notes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United...federal_budget
● 2014 Federal Deficit : $1,086 billion
● 2014 Debt Service : $229 billion
● (approx. 18% of all circulating money is paid to the creditor, yearly)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_U...federal_budget
● 2014 Federal Budget $3.5 trillion
● versus
● $1.29 trillion in circulation.
. . .
The amount of "legal tender" in circulation is $1.29 trillion.
The Federal government spends $3.5 trillion.
It borrowed $1.09 trillion and paid $0.23 trillion in interest.

SOMETHING.DOES.NOT.COMPUTE.

Maybe not this generation, but the next one will have to get skills from somewhere.

Will civilization have rebounded when we 'fashion' again?

Is there a 'S' 10 Years After The Fan thread?
