I am reminded of the end of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", where the main character and the others with him are dying from the pestilence caused by the thousands of dead peasants rotting against the electric fence they had built to slaughter the horde attacking their fortress. An allegorical reminder that things do not always go as planned, even for the "smartest" folks in the room. Or on the planet, as the case may be. Gotta love it. A few thousand(at most) people in their ivory towers, thinking they will simply eliminate 6.5 billion of us, who mostly have a lot of will to live, and are pretty damn good at making sure we do...

A simple way to get percentage is to divide the smaller number by the bigger number. The decimal is your percentage.

What concerns me the most is a thread by people purporting to be the ones who will survive calamity to keep the human race a viable species, and some of us cannot correctly do basic mathematics!

Your composition and punctuation sucks, too! You must be a real survivalist! Ya make me laugh, for sure. And that skill alone will be a worthy one in dark times...

This is funny for those in our age group...but it's scary what the snowflakes / smartphone crowd has (not) been taught! Just go over to Work and Employment and get a look at the results....

My wife was in a classroom with people studying to be financial advisers. There were about 8 students in the classroom and the teacher said that with the income tax rate at 31% if their clients wanted to clear $100K after taxes they needed to earn $131K.

My wife said wouldn't the number be closer to $150K? The teacher started yelling at her that she should pay attention since the tax rate was 31% and not 50%. None of the students said a thing.

Who is giving you financial advice?

To figure it out you would need to calculate your take home percent (1.00-.31) for a decimal of .69 or 69%.

Then, you need to figure out what number (x) that when multiplied by .69 creates 100.

To do this you need to solve the following equation of .69x=100.

Divide both sides by .69 so x=100/.69

From there you get x is approx. 144.9.

To check you do 144.9(.69) which is 99.81, close enough for me.

Your wife is correct.

But they never do.
Many choose not to have kids, which has the same long-term effect on the total population level and does not require suicide.

7billion to 500m = roughly leaves 1/14 of the original amount.

In percentage terms this 1/14 is , not using calculator , around 7.15.

So the reduction would be about 92.85 or so.
