There is a grocery store in one of the suburbs that carries a fair amount of kosher products, so I always hit that area in and around Jewish holidays to see what they have on sale. Invariably I find boxes of Shabbat candles on deep discount. I just picked up another box of 72 3 hour burn candles for a little over $2.00. Well worth a look if you have a market like that near you.

Ebay is good for odd-lot candles, too. We bought a couple large cartons of them, over a hundred per carton. Seller just wanted to get rid of them, for shipping. This was back when shipping was a lot cheaper. Heavy cartons! The candles (tapers and pillars) burn for a very long time, more than 12 hours.

I stocked up on candles years ago. Some of them came from Big Lots, but most came from a Salvation Army thrift store. I must have 30 or 40 lbs. stored, and haven't bought any for years. Any time I can find a wall hung candle sconce I buy it, though. They are safer than having table top candles.

Another power outage light source is oil lamps. I have half a dozen wall hung oil lamps, four oil lanterns, two of which are old miner's lamps with 1-1/4" wicks and two modern lanterns with 3/4" wicks. I keep one of the new ones hung by the front door as a porch light when power is out. Lighting by fire is dangerous. I never leave my Aladdins unattended, and conventional oil lamps live on the mantle and nowhere else.
