I've tried chapulines, and the actual taste and texture wasn't objectionable, but I can't quite get past the psychological barrier.

Edible bugs would probably be okay more heavily processed and with a very euphemistic name.

Like that's going to make a difference in a box-full of crickets.

A cricket apparently has 121 calories, so you'd have to eat a minimum of 15 per day to maintain a caloric intake of 1750 calories to be able to engage in physical activities.

15 a day is a mere pittance!

Unless I get shot down over occupied, communist, enemy territory (like New Jersey), I am NOT eating bugs.

It's real easy. Females have an ovipositor which looks like a long spike coming straight out their backside. It's to direct eggs as they are laid. So for a layperson males have two things coming out the backside and females have 3. It's very very easy to see the difference.

I purchase a lot of crickets because I have a bearded dragon. A big male bearded dragon who can eat 30-40 large crickets a day with his salad.

Yes, the males chirp. The running joke when buying crickets is to ask for females only. Some places will do that for an extra charge and I don't blame them.

However, that said- I wouldn't want to keep and breed them for survival purposes. They are not hardy insects. They don't like temperature extremes. In cold weather they grow very slow and their life-cycle is extended but they can't stand the heat. In heat their life cycle shortens. They need a water source that is not liquid otherwise they drown themselves- even a wet sponge can be trouble. So they'd need fresh juicy vegetables or fruit to survive more than a few days after the pet stores have been ransacked for hydration gel.

maybe start with baking bread with cricket flour and maybe have like cricket chips with the crickets being coated like chips in BBQ or sour cream and onion flavor. Maybe cricket fries or cricket bits for the salad? Maybe a healthier alternative to all the meat American's eat? Cricket burgers?

Grubs are likely the best source of a nutrient that is not as easy to find in the wild as one might think. That nutrient is fat. And getting it can be as easy as moving a rotting log and picking it up. Swallow like pills with water if you are squeamish about the texture.

Here are some cricket choices from Amazon. As Julia Child was wont to say."Bon Appetit!"

Don't bother looking for nutritional charts; there are none.

Now, we can expect to hear from all of the happy cricket eaters.
