I don't leave anything good in my car. Who would do that? I know; the neighbor. They took his laptop, phone, and some cash. I asked him if they'd smashed his window or jimmied it. Uhhh...it wasn't locked. You what?

Sealed in a Mylar bag, placed inside a 6" PVC tube with end caps glued. A desiccant can be added for moisture protection depending on the contents. Then buried somewhere outside the house (Hope to remember where the tubes are if the need to access them arises). Not too many thieves or intruders will go digging with no good idea if or where anything might be.

This is the best mentioned so far. There is an important caveat, however: a metal detector can be used to find them. Therefore, keeping them far from the house, perhaps at a different sort of location, can pay dividends if it's not necessary to quickly retrieve them. A talus slope is excellent because no digging is required to either bury or exhume. An area near an old mine often works well for hiding steel objects since there's often a large amount of iron in the soil.
The amount of buried treasure recovered is proof that people have been doing this for a long time. It's also proof that people forget, die, or are unable to return to a location.
