My elderly neighbor lady told me someone has been trying to break into her house after dark. Calling 911 is NOT an option as sheriff is 2 hours away in this rural area. I'm looking for very inexpensive ways to discourage (possible) intruders. In addition to other security options, anyone know where I can get home security alarm decals without a security alarm system?

This sign would probably be more effective than a security alarm system sign.

Or this

A security system won't get him any closer, so a sign won't be much of a deterrent.

I put out a sign reading "Forget the Dogs. Beware of Wife"

Lots of places. https://www.amazon.com/Security-Stic.../dp/B010GNQ3L0

How was he trying to get in? Does she have good window locks?

A lot of options would cost her a nice chunk of money, security cameras or fake security cameras, an alarm system that sets off an audible, loud alarm, more secure locks on windows and doors, more security lighting, etc.

As guidoLaMotto said, security alarm decals won't do much good if the criminal knows help is 2 hours away.

A little yappy dog could give her fair warning if she wasn't adverse to using a gun to back him up.

But, again, dogs cost money and it is never a good idea to get one just for security if you don't want a dog just for the love of one in the first place.

An elderly friend of mine was awoken one night my a noise at his front window. He ran to the window immediately, saw a smashed pumpkin laying on his front porch, ran outside and fired a shot from a pistol INTO THE GROUND. {where he knew there were no utility lines}

His home was never disturbed again. No doubt it was kids who thought he was shooting AT them, LOL.

Perhaps your friend could set up a target in her back yard and have someone take a few shots at it, making it appear as if this house has a gun owner who likes practicing their aim.

{but then, making a thief think there are guns in the home could give them another reason to break in, to steal the guns.}

Another thought, leave a large pair of men's old boots laying at the front or back door, etc., making it appear as is a man if living at the home, a husband or son.

Get one of those cheap fake TV lights and leave it on in the living room or spare bedroom all night, making the intruders think someone is awake......and maybe ready to shoot them. Add another timer to a light somewhere in the home, have it turn on and off for short periods during the night. Make it look like a night owl lives there.

Put out a big dog bowl full of water {keep it fresh} with a few big chewed on dog toys laying around it, put out a sturdy dog chain attached to a tree or pole, making it appear as if there is a big dog living there. Put a "Beware of Dog" sign nearby.

Maybe get one of these:

I used one on my father's empty home 30 years ago and it sounded pretty realistic then, I imagine they sound even better now. Plus, it would alert her to an intruder.

If I think of anything else, I'll be back, but for now, that's all I've got.

Nope
A thief is not going to try to break into a home during the night, with people inside, in hopes to steal their gun.

I think the elderly lady is hearing things myself. Why was he trying and didn't succeed, sounds like more than once? Doesn't make sense. They're not going to return to the same home multiple times and keep failing to gain entry.

In most remote areas, even knowing police aren't near, if they think you have a loaded weapon, they're not going to come to your house.

Scatter some empty 9mm shell casings around the property. And add a body silhouette on the ground for that final touch.

Solar motion detector lights are cheap enough, and provide an alarm something is moving out there, and most crooks don't like lights coming on in their face as they try to rip you off. Never know when it may just be making target identification easier

This. You could also get some cheap fake security cameras (or real ones, some aren't all that expensive) and install them in very visible locations.
