I live in Alabama. Alabama loves retirees - all of my income is tax exempt. We have a lot of military retirees in my area. It's a great comfort to know they are there.
My only experience with the military was post Hurricane Katrina. To say it was positive would be a gross understatement. They combined orders with common sense and compassion. God bless them.
Your experience with Katrina is a fairly common one. Still, however, experience seemed to be different every mile. Or more likely, depending on the local company (about 200 troops) commander.
As long as Suzie Millenial keeps making the payment on them, its fine. And if she keeps making the minimum payment, very little principal will be paid on it. You can't bankrupt the loans, either. They don't care if they have her in debt-slavery til the day she dies...She'll pay far more than the $90K and still owe when she dies. The debt will be written off...But that doesn't mean the lender hasn't collected their pound of flesh.

Something to remember about the USSR. Every urban family was given a small plot of country land. Like in Paris, spending the weekend tending a garden was viewed as a relaxing activity. Some families grew cabbages, another might keep bees for honey, another might pick mushrooms. Families traded with each other. Russians are also excellent at pickling and preserving foods - more so than 99% of Americans - so the average Russian was in better position than the average American is today.
When the fall of the USSR happened, the economic system collapsed first, then society fell - much like in Argentina. Russia's social security, government salaries and pensions stop without warning. The retired were abandoned and evidentially penniless. Families lost government salaries. Russian love Putin because they get their society security and pension again under his government.
If you don't think this can happen here, remember our currency and its inflation rate is controlled by a private bank. Even the president of the USA does not have the right to exam the Federal Reserves records or holdings.
The Federal Reserve has USA gold in its possession. Maybe we are more like the Weimar Republic.
