The absolute best way to store airtight is to use a vacuum sealer. There are many on Amazon that are under $100. These machines strongly vacuum the air out of heavy, food safe plastic bags that are customizable for size. No O2 absorbers needed, no mylar needed.
Once sealed, these bags can be labeled with a sharpie, then placed in any container you wish, whether airtight or not. This system works, and saves a lot of $$$!
I would still use the oxygen absorbers, just not much. The space between seeds will still store air.
Mason jars are airtight too. I have a dozen half gallon jars that should store 25 lbs of just about anything. Quart jars are available at thrift stores.
I found airtight plastic containers online at The Container Store. I wanted to store my out of season holiday decorations in the garage and our summers are long and hot. I threw in some cedar blocks also.
Just use a vacuum pack sealer then use 5 gallon buckets or totes to organize it. I have deer meat I vacuum seal and it’s good. I’ve eaten deer meat i had frozen for well over a year.
I usually make burritos with leftover food and freezing it. In some cases I’m eating that months later.
If you live in a state with a large Mormon/LDS population, perhaps you can visit one of their food storage centers? I'm not sure how they feel about outsiders using their facilities, but I know Mormons/LDS are very gung-ho about food storage, and they're not against using modern technologies. I'm pretty sure they have vacuum-sealed storage buckets they sell or give to members of their congregations.
The local Walmart sells white 5 gallon BPA-free food-grade plastic buckets for $3.40 (Hawaii price- probably cheaper at your local Walmart). The lids are sold separately for like $1.40. They are airtight and waterproof.
In addition to be being labeled as food-grade, they also last a lot longer in the sun before becoming brittle than any of colored buckets they sell at Walmart, Home Depot, etc. At Walmart the blue (not food grade) and white buckets (food grade) are the same price.
Since finding them they are the only buckets we buy. They are made in the USA by Encore plastics.
The local Walmart also sells ammo cans at reasonable price. They aren't made in the USA but the quality is good.
If you look on craigslist, you'll probably find a local biz that recycles barrels and buckets from restaurants. They sell them cheap, but you must clean them out further.
Galvanized cans come in all different sizes. The lids fit tightly and mice can't chew through them like they can with plastic. We use them to store pet food and garden supplies outdoors & in the garage. Ours are about 2 1/2 feet tall and work great. Amazon of course.
Health food stores usually get their whey protein, and other products, in 5 gallon buckets and will part with them for cheap or nothing if you know the proprietor. White buckets with a lid that snaps in place and a rubber seal.
I am able to find air tight bucket from grocery chain bakery . Bakery used to get their bakery supplies in these buckets.
Thanks for sharing.
